So, yes, this may sound like an obvious revelation to some, but I have recently found a deep and abiding love for Death Cab for Cutie. I have lourved The Postal Service for some time, and I've heard a number of Death Cab songs and enjoyed them and, here's the fun part, for some reason I never equated the two. I always heard Death Cab songs and was like 'Damn, that voice sounds familiar. I really love this song! I should look into this band ... ' and just never did. I deserve to be smacked with a wet herring upside the head, really.
About a month ago I heard 'I Will Possess Your Heart' on the radio, but they never announced the band (I think I turned it to that station during the song), and I really, really wanted it. Of course, like all things, I forgot about it and didn't hear it again until about 5 days ago or so, this time with someone announcing who it was by, and I kept telling myself I needed to find some Death Cab (as at the time I didn't own any) and listen to it. I've been meaning to for a while, since I've heard some of their songs before (hello, 'Follow You Into The Dark' ;___; ) and always liked them ... I just haven't ever followed through, as oft happens.
I ended up at Twist and Shout, the awesome music store next to the 'new' old Tattered Cover downtown with some friends, and ended up buying three of their albums on a whim. Well, not really a whim, more of out of desperate resolve because I just keep forgetting to fire up iTunes and look, or go searching for downloads, and there I was. I am now listening to Narrow Stairs over and over and over in my car. It is not quite like my wish for more Postal Service come true, but altogether awesome and wonderful in and of itself.
Really, I need to catch up with all the music I've been meaning to listen to, but this is a good start. I'm better at being obsessed with one album at a time, really, and it helps to absorb it this way, rather than random songs downloaded. Since a really good record is put together like a story, it should, I think, be listened to at first in the band's selected order, just to get a feel for the possible narrative. In that vein, I still need to download or buy lots of Coldplay and Muse because I feel I have had pulls towards listening to them that I have never yet quite fulfilled just listening to one or two songs here and there. :(
I am therefore also resolved to say, if there is other music people think I should listen to or wish to push upon me, please feel free. I'm obviously in the mood for new music, but I can't promise it'll take the place of me listening next to You Can Play These Songs With Chords over and over and over and over ...
