I don't often get a chance to geek out as a fan. But today I totally did. :D
I'm a fan of George R.R. Martin. I'm not a huge George R.R. Martin fan in the sense that I would have read the books a thousand times, but I am a fan. I listened to audio books of his series A Song of Ice and Fire while I was washing bones of a man that was buried four hundred years ago and a couple of horses and cows and a whole lot of broken cutlery at a summer job at an archaeological dig as a student. And I have fond memories of that summer and of the books. I read his
Not a Blog.
Now I watch the Game of Thrones HBO series with my boyfriend and I'm watching that, too, though we're a little behind due to lack of time. So since I heard he was coming here I planned to go at least look at the event. I mean, none of my favourite authors have ever come here before! It was really special to me. :) It was basically just a signing. No question and answer session at the start or anything like that. But of course since I made time to go there, I bought a book to have signed - I bought the Slovenian translation to support our poor tiny book publishing - with only two million people who speak the language it's a very small market. I got there right after work and bought the book and was going to go have lunch first, but realized there was already a queue forming and since I wasn't that hungry I decided to just get in line. And I'm glad I did because after I left there were still A LOT of people there! Since I don't really have RL friends who are into ASOIAF and my boyfriend had to work (he is still at work at the moment. :/) I was in line without any of my friends to chat with and it was a little boring. But I texted S. a lot and talked to my best friend on the phone... and I tried to figure out what to say to the man when I got the chance.
In the end I decided against telling him:
- The people who are nagging him to write faster are rude idiots and he should totally always take as much time as he needs.
- I want Daenerys Targaryen to be queen of everything.
- I read a theory I really liked online that Jon Snow is Eddard Stark's nephew and not son.
- How can he write such cruel things that happen to his characters, does he ever freak himself out at all.
And instead I told him that I listened to the audio books while washing bones at an archaeological dig. He seemed to be pleased at that. :) I feel like a bit of a silly person, but, um. Oh, well.
He seems like a very nice old man. And
here he is in Ljubljana! :D
The translator (the taller younger dude with also a huge beard) joked on twitter they were separated at birth. :P
I'm happy
they took him to Predjama castle.
Here is a
video of his first day in Slovenia.
He
seems to be enjoying himself here, I'm glad.
Photos:
Here is where I was standing for more than an hour and a half. Not too bad since I could see exactly what is happening at the front. I wasn't right at the start of the line though, because it went around in a loop to the right, there were I am guessing, around twenty people in front of me, but maybe more. The girl in front there is holding an awesome sword, but I didn't see if she gave it to him, showed it to him or if security intervened or what.
Here is the queue forming after me while I was waiting...
Signing! :D
Me and mr GRRM! I believe this is the first time I am posting a photo of me on my lj. *shifty eyes* I look awful though. D: oh, well. I am locking my photo to friends only, so if I don't have you added you shouldn't be able to see it. :P
Mr GRRM. :) He looks peaky in the photo due to terrible flash on my camera. But the alternative is blurry, so.
The queue as I was leaving:
It may not seem much if you're from a big city, but I've never seen a crowd like this in our bookstore. :D
OMG. On
http://twitter.com/#!/search?q=%23grrmSlo I saw some people waited for 5 hours. o.O!! Poor George.
