Day 6 - A Song That Reminds You of Somewhere
Spirits Liquors was such a fun place to work, especially during my last few summers there when everyone I worked with at night was pretty awesome and I was the one technically in charge. Unfortunately, thanks to WOBM's terrible soft rock radio, many fun memories from there are soundtracked by some of the worst music in existence. 40 hours a week filled with nothing but Rod Stewart, Elton John, the Eagles, and John Mayer! And it was always the same songs, over and over and over. You'd hear Phil Collins' "I Can't Stop Loving You" up to 3 or 4 times a day. The worst was when Delilah, a nationally syndicated radio show, would come on at 7 and her first song would actually be the last song they played on WOBM!
Somehow, through all the shit that poured out those overhead speakers, one song sticks out in my mind as the one that was played the most: Counting Crows' "Big Yellow Taxi." Whenever I hear it, my mind automatically thinks about stocking champagne bottles on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Ug, why couldn't Spirits' stereo get in some other station?

Day 7 - A Song That Reminds You of a Certain Event
This one should have a little asterisk next to it because this song only reminds me of this event if I listen to it through head phones. I've listened to Pearl Jam's "Last Exit" a countless number of times due to the fact that it's the opening track of their best album. There's really no single time or place that the song is reflective of because this CD ends up in the rotation of my "currently listening to" list all the time. I've listened to it in the spring at school, in the winter in Bayville, on rainy days in the morning, on clear summer nights at 3AM. There's no specific thing that the song itself reminds me of. Like Nick Hornby says, a really great song should just remind you of itself.
BUT when I listen to it on head phones, it always brings me back to when I was on vacation with my family in West Virginia when I was 16. We were going to be gone for the week. I had plenty of extra cash to spend thanks to a part time job and absolutely no bills to pay. I needed some music to help me drown out my family's conversation and successfully ignore them. Pearl Jam succeeded in this aspect. They also just happen to help change the way I viewed quality music, shaping my tastes for the rest of my life. So that week of listening to Vitalogy over and over again was a pretty important one. When I listen to track 1, I think back to that week of vacation in West Virginia with my family and am thankful that this music came into my life when it did.
