Farewell, Kristen

So the Paper Jets had their keyboardist, Kristen, quit. It wasn't too much of a surprise. All the signs were there. And, in the end, it's not that big of a deal. I'm sure Brian will miss the harmony vocals, but as an instrument, Kristen's keyboard style didn't really add too much to the overall sound of the Paper Jets. Don't get me wrong: she was a terrific piano player, but her style just didn't really do much for the music that the Paper Jets made.

It's a bit upsetting that Kristen didn't seem to really understand what the Paper Jets were about. I think she got hung up on the logistics of being in a band instead of really enjoying the music and the camaraderie that comes with it. The four of us who are left, the four of us who founded the group, know what we're about. We know what the music is about. We get it. And as soon as the four of us got together, we knew that each one of us understood.

I really believe that if we remain passionate about what we are doing, we will eventually get something out of this. Actually, let me change that: we already have gotten something out of the band. And if all we get out of the band is Saturday night shows in dark, empty bars, that's kind of okay. I get to make music with some of the greatest musicians and friends that I know. If we eventually find a fifth person who gets that, then that will be cool and maybe we'll have keys and harmony vocals again. If not, that's okay.
