i just got back from san diego where we, the usc ghettobirds, participated in an ultimate frisbee tournament at the university of california at san diego, *which is in la jolla, so actually i never went to san diego* (this line in between the asterixes was written after wrote the whole thing. no seriously, im astute). yesterday we made it past the first round into the elimination round. we endured 2 good wins, 1 hard loss, and one (pardon me) shitty-ass loss, which was subsequently won by karma/point differentiation.
we played four schools:
-occidental, a good team, fair team, personally i think that at our best we couldve won, however, we didnt and we got over it.
-university of san diego, good team, cool team, they have some really cool players, i was feeling the groove this game, we won...really well.
-oh my god, san diego state university, one of the shittiest games ive ever played, it was close, but they were assholes. there is no reason why they shouldve called 4 fouls or picks the first point (heh they were pissed because usd beat them because one of the sdsu guys wasnt paying attention while he yelled at one of his teammates, hmm, more karma). oh back to the game, we lost by one, it was painful, however, we soon found out that, by point differentiation, we were ahead of them. now, all we needed to do was beat cal tech, to advance.
-cal tech, hmm, theyre good, they look nerdy (and id guess that they all could kick my ass at quake III), and some of the guys are nice, but then some of them just dont have the spirit of the game. we won, yay.
today:
-university of california at san diego, i basically hate them. however, their team is so big that some of them have to be cool by the laws of probability. man, this team looked like a foot ball on the sidelines. goddamn, they would rush the field on every point they scored. oh and they always cheer soo loudly on both sides, it was starting to turn into a taunt, one big taunt, and distraction. we were up 7-3. and then... they scored.....5. they used a defense that we had never...ever practiced against called a cupasaurus (for those of you who know ultimate, its a four man cup). then we tied it up and i gotta talk about this point cause it was fucking glorious. there was soft cap called a point ago so the game was to nine and it was game point for them, but, everyones hates ucsd and likes us, so claremont, oxy (occidental), and every other school on the sidelines, except ucsd, were cheering for us. and we scored, and everyone gloriously, no not hypocritically (seriously), rushed the field. and then we lost the next point and that was game.
this was basically a bad (partially good) day for ultimate. we didnt call enough fouls on them and they called too many on us, seriously. so, sometimes when fouls dont get called teams can gain advantages. but, the good part was, ucsd was able to see how many allies they dont have. i mean come on, two guys from ucsd were playing for us, and they were good.
in conclusion, ultimate is about the spirit of the game. you can play competitively, but if you dont play with spirit youre not playing it right. teams, for the most part, either have spirit or dont. and when you play a team with spirit, whether you win or lose, it is a good game. but when you dont, you have to contain yourself and be focused, oh, and you gotta know the rulebook.
