Hm the question on AMA about tipping pizza delivery people got me thinking about trying to switch tipping systems. First off: I think the best system would be for food places to pay their employees a better wage and for tipping to become unnecessary, but I'm powerless to change that, so I'll ignore it :P

Your system would definitely screw people over and here is why...when you tip your server they do not keep all of the money. In some crappy places they pool tips (don't even get me started on how I hate that but whatevs). Any place I have worked runs in such a way that at the end of your shift you get a print off of how much you sold. You take all of your CC and debit receipts and subtract them from that total. The amount left is what you need to pay in cash. Now, when that is finished you look at the total amount sold again and you take out anywhere between 1-5% for bar, kitchen and 'house' respectively (usually it is 1-2% but I have seen 5% at a few places). From the cash left over after settling up what you owe you subtract that 3-15%. Anything left over is your tip money for the shift.
By using your system the server would get totally fucked because the bar, kitchen and house don't give a flying fuck if a $30 or $15 entree are more or less difficult to bring to a table.
