What my friend said:

ywg.dana: Well, as I understand it, the AG report was due to be tabled in early May before the election was called.
So releasing it now would really smack of political interference.
I recall in 2004 election the RCMP, smack in the middle of the campaign, announcing they were beginning an investigation into Liberal staffers over the sponsorship scandal
And it was so obviously meant to politically hurt them.
So I want the report out, and I'm certainly no fan of Harper, but I think the AG office should remain neutral and apolitical.

me: but don't you think it's relevant?
same with the example you cited
people deserve to know these things before making a choice in an election, don't they?

ywg.dana: Maybe. But I assume that the report wasn't finished yet or otherwise not ready for release?
I put a fair amount of trust in Sheila Fraiser because she's done a good job.

me: you know more about it than I do

ywg.dana: She and Kevin Page are awesome

me: who are they?

ywg.dana: Kevin Page is the parliamentary budget officer
It was actually a position created by Harper, with the idea that he would check the spending numbers the govt puts forth in budgets and stuff
And I was surprised given that he was appointed by Harper how great of a job he's done when their #s are bullshit

me: oh
nice
and he hasn't been fired yet? =P

ywg.dana: I KNOW!
Now that I'm thinking on it, part of the reason I'm maybe meh on the AG report is that even if it's released, I don't think it will make a big deal
Most voters don't seem to care that the govt basically lied about how much the jets are going to cost and tried to hide the true cost of the spending bills, etc

me: unfortunately =T

ywg.dana: So I think if it were released right now, I'd just get annoyed and depressed that people don't care
In part because they're more worried about the economy and jobs and health care
Which will make annoyed that people buy into the myth that Conservatives are good at financial management and the other parties aren't

Anyone that would judge that point based on one incident isn't doing much critical thinking about their vote. I'd bet they'd already made up their mind about their vote and just using things like that as sound bytes to support it.
