Serenity rocked. Great film, but I can understand how non-Firefly fans would find it confusing and/or not as compelling. Sixteen hours of getting to know the characters and their intricate relationship as well as the nuanced world that Joss Whedon created provides far more emotional investment than the 5-minute prologue and the seemingly random characters that popped up (to the Firefly layperson). As a fan of the series, I loved the movie - it answered many lingering question, produced some new ones and gave the crew an grandious adventure to embark on and provided many thrilling and heart-wrenching moments.
However, also as a Firefly fan, I almost wish Joss Whedon had taken the time to make the movie somewhat more accessible to those that haven't been converted to the Firefly gospel. It really felt more like the next 2 episodes of the series (with a better budget) than the beginning of a new movie franchise. I think the movie would be enjoyable to non-browncoats with its whizz-bang moments and well-written dialogue, but the emotional attatchment in the characters aren't there... Lets hope the word-of-mouth effect can work on this film. Word it Joss (like how we're on a first name basis?) signed a 3-movie deal with Universal so hopefully we'll see more Firefly/Serenity on the big screen soon...
