A Fallen Hero

"Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince, And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!"

Two days ago, one of my heroes, Steve "the Crocodile Hunter" Irwin died by a 10 inch barb through the chest after accidentally boxing in a sting ray whilst filming a kids' show. It's a sad day the world over. Steve Irwin truly was a hero of the environmentalism and animal cause. He made learning about animals fun again. Admittedly, this was because he did incredibly stupid and dangerous things, but they were also incredibly entertaining to watch. I mean, the man pulled the barb from his chest before he died, which just shows how awesome and crazy he was until the end. He was also the biggest Australian star since Paul Hogan. Now there is Heath Ledger and Russel "Fightin' Round the World" Crowe, but after Crocodile Dundee fell from grace there was only Steve Irwin. Steve Irwin was also a great family man. The fact that he included his wife on his show was interesting, although she was usually the worst part. He also included his kid and dogs in his work. Then there was his second family, the zoo crew, who we got to know just as well as Steve himself. Most star's dread sharing the spotlight, but Steve never cared for it. He was very humble in that sense and that no matter what he did, he always considered himself second fiddle to his father, another great naturalist. He did his work with pride and although he set an example for the rest of us to follow, he was really doing it all for the benefit of the animals.

So here's to you Steve Irwin, a great entertainer, educator, animal helper, and animal lover. We raise our pint glasses in toast to one of the greatest Australians ever. Cheers, mate.
