Previous chapters “Are you nervous, honey?” Elijah asked, looking at Luke who was sitting in his lap, looking at everything with big eyes, taking in the other people waiting with them and all the pictures on the walls in the waiting room.
As they had talked about when they had been in for the last ultrasound, they had taken Luke along for this one and while he had been excited and chatting about it nonstop at home, he was really quiet and subdued now, sitting in his papa’s lap and just leaning against him, not saying anything at all anymore.
“No,” he just whispered back, still looking at everything and everyone in utter fascination.
“Scared?” Elijah asked next and this time Luke stayed quiet, not replying at all.
“You don’t need to be scared, honey. Everything’s fine and you’ll really like it,” Elijah promised, looking at Dom next to him who nodded and was about to say something when they were called into the examination room. Dom picked up Luke and carried him while following Elijah into the examination room, where Luke’s eyes widened even more at all the machines and stuff inside, as he leaned into Dom, clearly intimidated by it all.
Luke had never been ill, other than having the occasional flu or childhood sickness and while he had been at his paediatrician’s several times, he had never been at a hospital or any other kind of doctor and had never seen these machines before.
“Hey sweetheart, everything’s fine. These machines will take the picture of the baby and will make you see it and hear it,” Dom explained and Luke looked up at that.
“They show us the baby?” He asked and when both Dom and Elijah nodded, he looked at the machines with slightly less fear and a bit more excitement.
“How?” He went on asking and Dom was just about to answer when the doctor entered the room and welcomed them, shaking their hands and smiling at Luke who leaned even more into Dom at seeing this strange man he didn’t know.
“So you are Luke?” The doctor asked, being used to this kind of reaction from children who didn’t know him. “Are you already excited about seeing the baby?”
When Luke nodded at that, the doctor smiled and sat down in his chair, once again asking Elijah his usual questions first before leading him over and urging him to bare his belly for the ultrasound.
Luke was still in Dom’s arms and was looking on with interested eyes, watching as the gel was spread on Elijah’s belly and his eyes got slightly scared when he saw the doctor take the ultrasound stick into his hand. “Will it hurt, Papa?” He asked his father and Dom shook his head at him.
“No honey, it doesn’t hurt at all. It feels like tickling,” Elijah replied, smiling up at Luke, wanting to show him that everything was okay.
The doctor started moving the ultrasound stick around and soon after a picture appeared on the screen and Dom directed Luke’s attention to it. “That’s the baby, can you see it?”
“It’s moving,” Luke noticed and Dom agreed.
“Yeah, what we see on the screen is happening right now! It’s like we’re watching television inside papa’s belly,” Dom tried to explain in simple terms, hoping that Luke was able to understand that way.
Luke was watching the screen intently but then pulled back slightly disappointed. “Where’s the baby?”
The doctor laughed at that and then pointed at certain parts on the screen while moving around the stick on Elijah’s abdomen.
“This is the head and here you have the arms and the legs. Can you see how the arms go to the head?”
Luke looked closely and then a smile broke out on his face and he nodded. “It’s the baby,” he exclaimed, as he was finally able to recognise the forms he was seeing and he nearly jumped up and down in Dom’s arms.
“Yes honey, it is,” Dom replied, his own eyes glued to the screen where the doctor was zooming in on a special area where steady pumping could be seen.
“This is the heart. Can you see how it beats constantly?” The doctor asked, looking up at Luke and Luke was utterly fascinated by the movements he could see on screen. So fascinated, he in fact forgot to nod.
“Now we’re going to take a little listen to the heartbeat,” the doctor announced, before once more pressing the button that allowed a steady bumping sound to fill the room.
“That’s the baby?” Luke asked, clearly amazed by the sounds they could hear, by now knowing that the baby was inside Elijah’s belly and never having heard it before.
“Yes, it’s the baby,” Elijah smiled, loving the sound of the steady bumping and thinking it was one of the most beautiful noises he had ever heard.
“Why do I never hear that when I talk to the baby?” Luke asked into the room and Dom chuckled at Luke’s innocence.
It was the doctor however who explained it. “It’s really, really quiet. We can’t hear it with our own ears. This machine here makes it a lot louder so we can hear it. Without this machine we wouldn’t hear it either.”
“Can we get that machine?” Luke asked next, making everyone in the room laugh.
“No honey, we can’t,” Dom told him, hugging him a bit closer when he saw the disappointment on his son’s face.
“It sounds nice,” he said quietly and Dom and Elijah could only agree, looking at each other and sharing their emotions in that look.
The doctor continued taking a closer look at certain parts, Dom, Elijah and Luke closely watching every movement on the screen.
“Someone’s quite active today,” the doctor announced in amusement, noting that the baby was moving around quite a bit. “And a bit shy. Probably knows that the brother is here watching as well,” he added as the baby turned away from them.
“Does it hurt, Papa?” Luke asked as he watched how the baby moved and saw it turn around, wondering what it had to feel like to his papa to have this baby turn around in his belly.
“No, it doesn’t. It feels quite funny, actually,” Elijah replied, seeing the confused look on Luke’s face.
The doctor turned around to Dom and Luke and went on asking. “Would you like to take a picture, Luke?”
“Can I?” The small boy asked, clearly surprised by that offer, not having expected it.
“Sure you can. Come over here,” the doctor said, pointing to a place between himself and Elijah.
Dom let Luke down and watched how he slowly walked over, encouraged by Elijah’s words. “It’s okay, honey. Come here.”
When Luke had arrived at the point the doctor had indicated, he looked from the doctor to his papa and back.
“Would you like testing the machine for a bit?” The doctor asked and all Luke could do was nod.
“Why don’t you get up there next to your father then,” the doctor suggested and then helped the small boy up and helped him kneel next to Elijah’s belly before picking up the ultrasound stick again and handing it to Luke.
“Move it around slowly and push it down a bit,” the doctor instructed and Luke took over from him, taking the stick, slowly moving it around on Elijah’s belly like he had seen the doctor do before.
“You have to push a bit more,” the doctor told him. “That way we can get a clearer picture.”
Luke did as he was told and soon enough the baby appeared on the screen again, obviously having turned towards them again. “Am I doing that?” Luke asked, pointing towards the screen and he laughed when everyone told him that it was him indeed.
“Woah,” he just exclaimed, obviously feeling really proud and grown up and Dom and Elijah couldn’t help but feel slightly emotional at the sight of Luke taking an ultrasound picture of his brother or sister.
“Now, isn’t that a nice shot?” the doctor asked as they had a clear view on the baby, easily able to make out the head, arms and legs and when everyone nodded, he took over the stick from Luke and kept it in place while he showed the boy which button to press so the machine would print the picture.
When the picture had been printed and Luke was holding on to it tightly as if it was a treasure, the doctor ended the ultrasound and turned off the machine, handing Elijah some tissues before returning to his place at the desk and informing them that everything was fine and they had one healthy baby from the looks of it.
Afterwards a very happy family left his office and papa and son were only too happy to accept daddy’s invitation for some ice-cream, spending the rest of the day at the playground in the park, eating ice-cream and building sandcastles.
