[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Kaname Madoka
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Fandom: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Timeline: post-series!
History:
Her wiki page and
an episode guide summary of the events in PMMM.
Character Personality:
Overall, Madoka is honestly just a good person. She doesn't lie, she doesn't cause trouble, and she always tries to do the right thing - this is observed in the show when her mother brings it up during a mother-daughter talk. She's friendly to the people that she talks to, although maybe somewhat shy when she's not around her closer friends. She's gentle and kindhearted and she doesn't want to cause trouble to anyone! She wants to do her best to help the people around her out because she honestly dislikes seeing anyone or anything in pain. Madoka will always try to help them out to the best of her ability.
She is something of a messiah type character - literally, yes, since she is the goddess of hope, but also just in how she acts. She's extremely kind, like I mentioned above. She loves everyone and wants to protect them regardless of whether she knows them personally or not, and she wants nothing but the best for them. Madoka's personality in general is a very warm and caring one, especially now that she's a goddess, but she's always had that trait. She doesn't want people to cry, and would definitely rather see the people around her with a smile on their face. That's why she fights and why she sacrifices herself in the first place. She wanted to destroy the rules that prevented the magical girls from smiling.
Aside from her being an incredibly kind person, she is also full of hope. Fitting, considering that she's the goddess of hope! But anyway, she even says this after making her wish to stop witches before they're even created: "If someone tells me that it's wrong to hope, I will tell them they're wrong every time. I could tell them countless times." She wants people to always believe in themselves and the people around them, and she wants them to keep hoping no matter what.
When Madoka is angry, it manifests in a calm determination. She is never the obvious and usual kind of angry, and she doesn't lose her cool. She has to be strong as a goddess, right? Even when she's not angry, she is an incredibly determined person. She's not the kind to lose her cool, and she will beat back whatever is making her angry with kindness. She does it for everyone - the people she cares about and knows and wants to protect as well as the people that she doesn't know. They're all important to her, no matter what. The pain of others is something she feels very deeply, and she refuses to let them feel that way if she can help it.
She has always taken the death of someone hard, or just... anything that involves the fate of magical girls in the original universe, before she rewrote it to be a better place. She spent a good chunk of the middle part of the series crying over death - and she cried during the timeline when Mami started to kill the magical girls off once she learned about their souls not really being in them anymore. Even though she's a goddess now and she's learned how to handle death in a way that doesn't involve breaking down and crying all the time, she will still shed tears over the people that she was unable to protect. She will resolve to do her best to protect everyone else that is still alive, too.
Madoka is a very selfless person - she puts others before herself all the time, and this is shown by her wishes! Her very first wish to be a magical girl was wishing for a cat that had been killed to be revived. Other wishes included saving everyone from Walpurgis Nacht, an incredibly powerful witch, and, of course, there's her wish to erase every witch before they even existed. She sacrificed her own existence to make the world a better place for everyone! This selflessness, however, might be a product of that fact that Madoka does not have a lot of self worth. She never thought that she'd do something useful for the people around her, so having a chance to do that and having the power to do it could have led her to doing what she did. Sacrificing herself like she did would have allowed her to do something good for the people she cares about.
As a goddess, Madoka will have lost her shyness - she will be an outwardly friendly and supportive person, and she will do her best to provide hope to everyone in the best way she possibly can. She will do everything she can to help out the people around her, and she will have a calm determination when it comes to dealing with the witches that threaten a peaceful life for everyone. She will defeat them with kindness like she handled the witches in her canon, and she will try to do for the world of Soul Campaign what she did for her own world. BREW brought her there for a reason, right? Well, she'll fight for them and a kind and gentle world for as long as BREW will let her.
Character Abilities:
For a good chunk of PMMM, Madoka is a pretty normal girl with a lot of potential as a magical girl. Kyubey makes a point to say this at least once an episode to make sure she knows. But-- anyway, her potential as a magical girl made Kyubey pretty certain that, no matter what Madoka's wish was, she would have it granted!
Kyubey wasn't lying. Due to the events of the series and the fact that she was able to grow like she did (even if it was a painful journey), Madoka was led to wish that she could go to all times a magical girl ever existed and stop all witches from ever being born-- she does just that, too. She goes around to all the various magical girls throughout time and absorbs their misfortune so that the witches are never born. This leads to Madoka pretty much erasing herself (because she would have become a witch herself), rewriting reality, and destroying and recreating an entirely new universe where witches never existed. She is the goddess of hope, and the price of her wish is that no one remembers her but Homura, and she will never have a completely physical body ever again-- she's okay with that, though. She can be everywhere at all times to watch over the people in the new universe.
A magical girl's power depends on how much misfortune they bear, as well as how much of an effect they'll have on their world. The reason Madoka is such a powerful magical girl is because Homura kept resetting the timeline and with everything focused on her and her fate in every parallel universe her effect on the universe continuously grew as the amount of times the timeline reset increased. Along with that, Madoka bears enough misfortune to completely destroy a new universe due to her absorbing the misfortune of every magical girl to exist in the past, present, or future-- and on top of that, of course, she has enough hope to create a new one.
As a magical girl, her weapon is a rose bow and arrow that fires pink bolts of magic!
As a teenage girl, she's pretty good at drawing.
Character Weaknesses:
Madoka, due to the canon point I'm taking her from, doesn't really have physical weaknesses aside from the fact that she doesn't exist in a physical manner. She can't be with a person physically, which is something of a weakness! She says that it doesn't bother her, though-- she can still be everywhere at all times to watch over everyone in the new universe. But! It's still a weakness because while she says it doesn't bother her, it's still a fact that she cannot touch people in a physical manner.
Mentally and emotionally, Madoka cannot stand to see people in general getting hurt. She will do absolutely anything to protect as many people as she can - that's why she so willingly gave herself up like she did. She did it to protect people, and it makes her incredibly sad to see people getting hurt, no matter what the reason is. She spent a lot of time crying throughout the entire show due to the fact that her friends were getting hurt or killed or turned into witches.
Another potential reason as to why Madoka sacrificed herself for the universe so willingly (aside from the fact that people were getting hurt/would get hurt due to the witches) is because she doesn't really have a good self image-- and she never thought that she would do something useful for the people around her. Sacrificing herself like she did would have allowed her to do something good for the people that she deeply cares about (as well as anyone else that exists).
Her selflessness in general can also count as a weakness, since she will willingly give herself up to protect someone and do whatever it takes! This could easily lead her to getting hurt, and it has in some of the previous timelines. It's why she made the contracts that she has, for the most part. Everyone will always go before her.
Also, while this is potentially not really a weakness due to the fact that she's come to terms with it, Madoka cannot touch anything due to not having a physical body and no one remembers who she is. That's the price of her wish. Like I said, this is something that she's come to terms with and she seems fairly happy about it, it's still something that she can't do.
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign?
For the most part, Madoka won't be retaining any abilities in Soul Campaign. She's a goddess - an incredibly powerful one - and that is going to be lost! And she would also lose any of the basic abilities she would have had as a magical girl, since she won't be able to access that power in the game either. However, she will be retaining her ability to draw because that isn't powered by magic. She will also be retaining her ability to try to bring hope to others just by being a cheerful, patient, and selfless person-- she won't be able to be everywhere to provide the warm feelings, though, so she will only be able to do this by talking to others, of course. Nothing beyond what a normal person could do.
What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
There are a lot of weaknesses that Madoka will gain by being in Soul Campaign simply because she's no longer going to be a goddess! She will not have the power to destroy and recreate universes, she will not have the ability to be everywhere at all times to watch over everyone like she wants to, and she won't be able to be everywhere throughout time. She will also not be able to provide the feeling of hope - the feeling that no one is alone - as easily as she would have been able to as a goddess.
BREW will turn her into a normal fourteen-year-old girl, pretty much! So way to go, BREW, you nerfed a goddess that stopped all witches before they even existed. The fact that they were a different kind of witch is a minor detail.
A weakness that she will lose though will be the fact that she'll no longer just be someone that will be there unseen. People will remember her, they'll remember what she did, and they'll be able to feel her touch them physically! This is not something that she had as a goddess, and while she's come to terms with and accepted the fact that she would never be able to feel or do or experience that kind of stuff again, actually getting to experience it again will be an experience she'll like.
[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]
Why your character should be a Meister:
I think that Madoka should be a Meister because, while she is not really a fighter (especially compared to the other girls in her canon), she has a calm determination that would help her out in battle when it comes to making smart decisions. Along with that, Madoka is a very kind, caring, and gentle person-- she would always look out for the well-being of her Weapon, and she would always make sure that her Weapon was taken care of and never pushed too far. Madoka would take care to keep her Weapon from getting hurt badly! She would also make a point to make the relationship equal, and would never think of herself as being above her Weapon just because she's a Meister.
Meister Ability: Calming Wavelength; Their soul soothes those around them and is resistant to the Madness Wavelength.
