Told you it was sad. I wanted Annie to realize she has feelings for him but not actually realize they're feelings.

That makes a lot of sense. Watching the show, I get the sense she thought Jeff was hot, but it wasn't until close to the end that she realized it might be more than that. And for all that Jeff acts clueless, I think part of the reason he continued to be a jerk sometimes was the old "If I pull the girl's hair, no one will realize I actually want to marry her when I grow up and start wearing suits."
