"How can I live in a world where The Immortal is dead?" --- Arthur (The Tick)
This likely won't mean anything at all to my LJ friends who read this, but Chris Benoit is dead. He was (if I were to actually make a concrete list) my second favourite wrestler overall (behind Shawn Michaels), and without a doubt one of the best in-ring performers of all time.
He was scheduled to win the ECW World Title last night, instead he was found dead in his home alongside his wife and son. The picture isn't clear yet, but current theory is Murder/Suicide. This lies so strongly in conflict with how he lived - everyone who knew him cited his love for the business and for his family. It's hard to even begin to comprehend how something like this happens.
In what was otherwise a lackluster event, the highlight (and only reason I booked it on SKY) was to have been Chris Benoit vs CM Punk. When time came for the match, it was shockingly announced that Benoit was being replaced by Johnny Nitro, that he couldn't make the show due to personal reasons. No one knew at the time what was going on with him. The replacement match was still the best of the night, but the crowd were all over it, chanting "We want Benoit".
We sure as hell do.
Even scarier? Just last week I was discussing on a message board - someone said "Johnny Nitro for ECW Champ!", to which I replied "Over Benoit's dead body". Look at me, Nostra fuckin' Damus over here. Times like these, you hate to be right with a figure of speech like that.
