Comic Strip Tournament

Jan 27, 2008 20:39

Based on the results of the last poll, I'm proud to announce the Comic Strip Tournament. A big thank you to everyone who helped me pick this out. It was certainly good for me to make that entire list; I'll have plenty ideas for when the next tournament rolls around.

I'm going to take a week or two to work on the seeding. There will probably be 96 entrants total, in eight regions of twelve (the top four seeds in each region get a bye). Here are the criteria I have in mind:

  • Newspaper strips only -- As in, no webcomics or comic books. Sorry, Penny Arcade. Webcomics that made the transition to print, such as Diesel Sweeties or Helen, Sweetheart of the Internet, are fair game.
  • Daily strips only -- Comics that are only published on Sunday, like Opus are exempt. Note that this doesn't disqualify the current iteration of Foxtrot, which began as a daily.
  • Retired comics are fair game -- In fact, right now I have retired comics as four of the 1-seeds (Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, Bloom County, and The Far Side, though I guess that last one could conceivably slip to #2).
  • Editorial cartoons don't count -- I don't think anyone was confused by this, but just to be clear, I'm not counting about matching Pat Oliphant against Tom Toles. Again, daily strips that usually have clear political content, like Doonesbury, are fine.
  • Every comic from the Bellingham Herald and every discussed on The Comics Curmudgeon will be in the tournament -- This is pretty self-explanatory, I think.
Be sure to leave nominations in the comments!
