janejuly . SQ, after S2 finale. Regina is exhausted and they know the only way to restore some energy ;)They know how to do that kind of magic together:) Un'betad.
They are fighting for beds and sleeping arrangements for over an hour until Emma realizes that Regina is sitting at the corner of the room, with as much distance between her and their small group as she can, head between her hands, and she’s, uncharacteristically, quiet.
“You okay?” She asks with concern and when she doesn’t get an answer she looks at her mom, then to her dad, Hook the last to stop talking, before calling the brunette’s name. “Regina?”
Regina lifts her head with effort and she’s so pale Emma’s afraid that she’s going to pass out any minute now and she must feel the same because she looks at Emma with glassy eyes. “I need to lie down for a while.”
For a while turns out to be the better part of the day. With one room occupied, they soon agree for Snow and David to take the other while Hook and Rumple will take turns. Emma tries to catch some sleep, but she’s not used sleeping on a ship or traveling with one if the times she visited the toilet is an indication, and she’s so glad when Hook comes at dinner with something that smells a lot like burned milk, but has the color of coffee and tells her that it will help with the sea sickness.
True to his word, Emma feels fine only minutes after drinking it.
“Where’s Regina?” She looks at her mom preparing what she assumes is their dinner; bread, some cheese, few tomatoes and something that smells like salami but looks like it belongs to a museum. “She’s still sleeping?” She asks when Snow shrugs and looks at David for help.
“She’s…”David looks skeptical and exchanges a quick look with Gold, and that’s something Emma doesn’t like not one bit. “She’s resting.”
“You’re lying,” Emma is sure about that. Maybe her super power is not as keen as she once thought, but David is easy to read. “What’s going on? If there’s something wrong with her and we go after Greg and Tamara…”
She doesn’t finish her thought. It’s pretty obvious to everyone at the table. She have used her magic, but it’s not something she knows how to do and between Gold and the Evil Queen, Emma chooses the Evil Queen. Maybe they are all in a boat to Neverland, but Regina was down in the mines doing something while Gold was at his shop doing nothing to help the situation and Emma is not willing to believe that Gold had a sudden change of the heart.
“She’s exhausted.” It’s Gold that answers her and Emma stares at him ‘cause he’s keeping something from her.
“A good night sleep and she should be fine by the morning, right?” When he just smiles with a smile that makes her feel uneasy, she asks again. “Right?”
“She’s empty, dearie. Spent. Her little ordeal yesterday and her little act of heroism--“
“At least she tried.” Emma’s jaw is tight with tension, but doesn’t miss her dad putting a comforting arm around her mother. She runs a hand over her hair. She doesn’t need to piss him off. They need to be together in this. For Henry. “Okay, so she’s spent. What does that mean? We’re talking about Henry’s life here, your grandson. We need her. Henry needs her.”
Gold looks down and Hook, sensing that it would be for the best if he’s out of the way, finds an excuse about stars and the horizon, and he’s out of the small cabin without another word, leaving what must be the most dysfunctional family at two worlds to talk. Emma gives him a small smile and Snow assures him that there will be food waiting on the table for him.
“Now talk.”
“Her magic, like yours, dearie, comes from within.” He points at her and Emma is not sure if he means her heart or her body or her DNA. “Mine comes from the dagger, as you know. The fairies have their dust and wands, and people are known to develop the ability to do some magic after a curse, like jinn.”
Emma nods to him to continue.
“When someone with magic like yours and Regina’s, use all of your power then the body starts to restore that power with all means necessary.”
“What-what does that means?” David asks but from Snow’s sharp breath, Emma gets her answer.
“Her own body is attacking her,” Emma whispers. “Like cancer? Jesus, magic is like cancer? She’s going to die? I-is that what you’re saying? I use all my power and I die?”
“No!” David says standing next to her. “I’m not going to let that happen.”
Gold looks at Snow with a sly smile and her mother looks annoyed by that, but says nothing,
“Fortunately for you, the last case of someone dying after using all her magic was way before my time.” He smiles and stands up, cane on hand and offering no other explanation. “She’s going to be ill for most of our trip to Neverland, but she’s not going to die. Or you, dearie.”
Once again they are alone to take care of a sick Queen, but this time David doesn’t look like he’s doing it because they are the good guys and that’s what the good guys do. He looks worried and gives Emma smalls looks that she returns with a smile.
“Dad, I’m fine. I feel fine. With Hook’s drink I don’t even feel like I’m on a boat.”
“You sure? The minute you feel sick or tired--“
She shakes her head. “Regina did most of the work with the trigger. And I can only imagine what Greg did to her.” She looks at her mom and this time Snow White is not angry with the Evil Queen, but with the people that hurt the Evil Queen.
“We need Regina on our side,” her mother says and Emma nods. “I don’t trust Hook and Gold is, well, I’m not sold yet.”
“He’s Henry’s grandfather,” David states.
“And he did nothing,” Snow tells her husband. “Emma was right. He didn’t even try to help, David. He was Henry’s grandfather then too.”
“And you trust Regina?”
“The Regina of the mines, I do. More than Gold. Or Hook.”
There are times when Emma thinks that her parents have an entirely conversation on their heads and sensing that this is one of those times, she cleans her throat and stands up.
“I’m going to see how Regina is doing. Maybe she knows something about restoring her magic faster.”
“Try to give her something to eat.”
She doubts it, but takes a piece of bread and some cheese with her.
Even if the Queen is good enough to eat, Emma doesn’t think that this is the meal of a Queen.
But for Henry she has to try.
