“This is for kids.”
Jason says and wipes with a towel the water from his hair. Barbara looks at him for exactly two seconds before turning her attention back to the screen. He smells of soap and aftershave and in typical Jay style he’s half naked.
“I didn’t ask your opinion. Go get dressed.”
He smirks and leaves the room.

“Who’s she?” He asks.
“Makoto.”
“And the tall guy?”
“Kousuke.”
“Who’s the redhead?” He asks again and this time she pause the movie.
“I thought it was for kids,” she snaps.
Jason has the dignity to look apologetic. He smiles at her. “Can’t a man change his opinion?”
She pushes play.
“He’s Chiaki. Now shut up.”

Jason laughs with his whole body. He throws his head back and bends his knees and he can’t be comfortable like this, but he doesn’t seem to mind. He barks-there’s no way that sound coming from his mouth is a laugh.
Barbara smiles; about damn time.

“Women are stupid,” he says between his teeth and for a moment he looks at her like she killed his puppy.
“What?” she asks trying not to laugh.
“Nothing.”

His body is tense and he sits at the edge of the sofa. It’s been a while since he last made a comment and he even refused her proposal to order a pizza.
Barbara’s not so sure that he heard her in the first place, but she’s going to order one anyway after the movie ends.

“He’s not going to leave, is he?”
“He has to, Jason. It’s not like he wants it,” Barbara says and wonders if she’s indeed defending a fictional character to him or if she’s dreaming.
Only in her dreams Jason Todd would get all worked up about an anime character.

“I’ll be waiting in the future? What the fuck?”
“Well, he is from the future,” she states the obvious.
Jason shakes his head clearly not approving of the way the story goes. He looks like a little kid that didn’t get what he wanted for Christmas. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that in a way he is a kid.
He has the body of a young man and the attitude of ten men, but he’s still a kid that suffered a lot.
“If you love someone you don’t go away,” he says and she can feel the pain behind his words.
He was the one left behind.
“It’s not about love,” she takes off her glasses and cleans them in her tee. “The movie is not about love.”
“Yeah, right,” he snorts.
“It’s not about love,” she says again and looks at him. “It’s about hope.”
“Hope? Did you watch the same movie as me?”
“To be able to think about the future and smile that’s something…I don’t know, I’m tired and,” she rubs her eyes, “I want to believe it’s about hope. It makes sense to me. It doesn’t mean I’m right.”
She can’t tell him that she wants the movie to be about hope because hope is something that she needs right now. More than love. More than faith. More than anything she needs hope.
“I guess it makes more sense your way,” he says and they don’t talk for the rest of the movie.
Maybe deep down all that Jason needs is a little hope.
He’s not a bad person.
He just has lost his hope, and she’s going to help him find it, and maybe he can do the same for her.
And that thought is enough to make her smile.
