Required Reading

Stupidly overdue LJ update #1

********************************************************

So, like all classes, I have required readings.  This year, two of the books I have to read are "Servants of Satan: The Age of the Witch Hunts" by Joseph Klaits and Christopher Hitchens' bestseller "God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything."    Both books are bright yellow, one with "Servants of Satan" in big, black letters, although "God" is much smaller than "by Christopher Hitchens."  While these are books that I would have ended up reading on my own (in fact, I bought God is Not Great last December with my Christmas money before I realized it was required reading in one of my classes), but my reading pattern wouldn't have made me read them every day in the Union.  In front of people.

The first time I busted out "Servants of Satan" on the bus, I happened to sit across from a guy dressed in a black sweater with some punk band logo on it, black denem jeans covered in chains and a face covered in piercings.  He asked how I liked the book.  I said that it was okay; long-winded but relatively accessable.  Then he told me that "I, too, am in the dark arts."  ... o_0 ... Then I told him that this was a textbook about witch hunts, required for a class about the history of witch hunting.  I asked if by "dark arts" he meant Wiccanism.  He said no.  I asked if he was into Anton LaVey type Satanism, to which he said, "Who's that?"  When I just asked what he was into, he said... "Vampirism."  He then told on to tell me that he wanted to go to school at OU... to become a proffessional piercer.  Before he could, though, he had to get a job.  And a place to live.  I wished him good luck with that, and last I saw him, he disappeared into Riverbend.

I have yet to break out "God is Not Great."
