[This entire situation was completely illogical.  He'd seen the murders and he suicides in that other place, before all of his memories simply stopped.  And now it was like none of that had ever happened.  How was it possible?  How had they pulled off that trick?

For once, Conan was stumped.  He needed to think.  And Conan had always done his best ( Read more... )

I think I saw one before, in the abandoned stores.

[This child is also stumped, but he's definitely sadfacing instead of happyfacing.]

Thanks, I'll check it out.

[And Conan definitely notices that. Well, it wasn't that he expected real children to put on the same act he was.]

How are you doing, Robin?

[It's normally hard to get Robin down. But all that Au Discedo death was definitely affecting him.]

I am ok.

Oh. You shouldn't go there alone! Sometimes, the dangerous monsters show up.

[Conan himself was angry, both at the people responsible for the whole affair and at all the idiots who had gone along with it. But it was an adult anger, and so he could not show it. Better to hold it until he could direct it at the proper targets.]

The monsters everyone keeps talking about? As for that, I have yet to see any evidence that they actually exist as anything more than a trick designed to keep us within this city.

[Both of Robin's eyebrows go straight up. Yep, it's an 'are you crazy?' look. He shakes his head after a minute.]

They are real! But, I don't know if they are really monsters. This world could actually have animals like that.

They are dangerous though!

You don't believe in dangerous animals?

I have seen them. A lot of them. Do you want to see any?

Animals may be dangerous. But the truth is, that it is a simple matter to use such a thing as a scare tactic. Announce that a dangerous animal is in the area, and many people will never look any further for the true cause of a crime.

And how do you know that what you saw was in fact an animal?
