I haven't posted in almost a month, eep. I am going to try to catch up best I can, but between this week and the one before spring break, plus vacation, it seems like it will be a novel before I am done. That only makes me put it off more. Ok, so the first week of March:
This was the weekend that my parents visited. I just realized that I hadn't written anything about that! They got here on Friday afternoon and brought my dog. It was nice having them take me out to all these restaurants and stuff but I quickly overdosed on all the desserts and huge portions. Friday night we went out to Bella Avanti, a teeny Italian restaurant that does mostly take out. They even have a drive thru window. There are only about 12 tables in the restaurant the size of a small classroom but we got there early so we got a table. I got chicken parmesan and tiramisu for dessert. The food was really good, we got a big salad like they do at Olive Garden. The one problem was that since there was only big room you had to listen to everyone else's conversations. Then we went to the movies and saw The Reader. It was kind of awkward with my parents since they were some steamy scenes, but most of the viewers were definitely on the older side. I thought the movie was really good, but it was super sad. I figured out the "secret" of the movie fairly soon and never really understood why that was such a big deal. The ending was sad. But Kate Winslet really was good so she deserved the Oscar. On Saturday we went to the science fair on campus for the area schools. My dad brought Abby in but this jerky employee made him take her out of the building. After that we went to get groceries and to Petsmart. Abby made all the dogs aggressive! I don't know why that is, she is usually playful. My mom got a peanut butter ball for her, a big hard rubber ball that you put biscuits or peanut butter in for when you leave her alone. She chews on things. For lunch we went to the new Concannon's place off McGaillard. It's the most amazing place. They have a huge bakery section with cases of donuts, cookies, and everything else. They have all kinds of cakes and stuff. Then they also sell lots of packaged cookies they made as well as popcorn and chocolates from another local store. The other half is the coffee bar and cafe. It's kind of like Panera. The food was really good, I got soup and sandwich. It was super busy since it just opened, but it's really a cool place. We ate late so we didn't go out for dinner until after 8. I wanted to go to Scotty's since I had never been there. I got the buffalo chicken wrap and fries. The waffle fries were SO good. The wrap was way too spicy even though I asked for mild. I couldn't finish it. The menu was really huge but most things were way too spicy. Sunday morning we went to the MT cup coffeehouse for breakfast before they left. We got the breakfast sandwich type things which were really good if way too unhealthy.
I had a ton of homework to do for the upcoming week that I had been trying to get finished before my parents came. So when they left I started in on that. For my ecology class I had a takehome test due Tues as well as a big presentation. All my hard work paid off because I got As on both =) After that I was super relieved and excited. The next night I went to see Thomas Friedman speak and I actually fell asleep! I had gone by myself but saw a friend behind me. I guess I had been really tired, because it was warm and comfy. In the beginning he had laid out the four things he thought were most important in climate change and biodiversity was the last. That was the only one I really wanted to hear. As I was waking up from my doze, sure enough I hear "and that wraps up the four major topics..." so I missed it. I thought he was a good entertainer, performer, speaker, but I was not that moved by what he said.
Thursday I had four meetings! For SSC I had to lead the meeting which actually went pretty ok. At Wildlife Society hardly anyone was there and another grad student gave a talk about his research and then we looked at salamanders. Circle K next, which is always a good time with snacks, and then the truth movement. Our president was gone and a lot of new people actually came. At the end we got involved in a global warming debate. It made me super mad at the ignorance of the people in the same school as me. I had started packing and gotten most of it done so on Friday after 2 hours of stats and meeting with the guy that will probably be one of our assistants, I drove to Ohio. First I had to stop at AAA to get all the books and maps. I brought my cat so she could stay there.
The first night in Ohio we got Chinese food and I ate a TON. I was probably so relieved to be done with the week I just overate. Plus I never get food like that. It was not a very good idea. I watched some of this old movie Mike's dad had on called Picnic. One of the lines was "At a picnic everybody disappears". I thought it was a cute movie until all the drama started with this traveler getting his shirt torn off by this older drunk lady. I went shopping with Mike's mom. Saturday I slept in and started in on my homework and grading. I finished all of both by the time Mike came. I had not seen him since January. We went off to get a nice air mattress for us to stay on since his bed is tiny and lopsided. That night was this huge turkey dinner with the Chinese mentees his parents have. We talked to them for a while and played Uno and Candyland. It was pretty funny. The weather was so nice then as well so it was a good start. I ate a whole bunch at dinner too, my turkey leg and stuffing and mashed potatoes. That night we watched Burn After Reading, which was pretty dark and not a comedy like I thought it would be. Sunday we didn't leave until 11 because there kept being more things to do- plus Daylight Savings. We left for Drew's. I slept of course, being in the car makes me sleepy. When we got there we saw Drew and Kala's fancy new place. They bought a townhouse. It has a garage and back patio and wood floors. It's super nice, the kitchen is fancy and the rooms are big. We played corn hole for a while when we got there because there were four of us. I had never played before but it is a big deal here in Indiana. We also played fetch with Samui, their Cocker Spaniel. We had dinner off the grill and then drinks came! They have a wide assortment of liquors. I had my first sip of tequila. Yuck. I realized that I have never had gin or tequila or pretty much anything other than vodka or rum. I made an appletini with apple mix and lemon vodka which was really good. We played Scene It the girls vs. boys version. Kala and I rocked. Mike had a tequila sunrise which looked cool. We stayed up super late, it was midnight. On to the week!
