I went to sleep rather suddenly and early (for me) … again! I haven’t done much of anything yet today so I’m writing up yesterday’s puttering on the morning after …again.
At least I think I know what’s going on … I’m suffering my monthly pre-menstrual cold / sinus infection. I have been noticing the pattern for months now but I was sure I was exaggerating the correlation. Today, after talking to R-about crashing hard and early for three days in a row, I relented and turned to the web. Sure enough, I’m not crazy. Well, if I am crazy, I’m not alone. A search for ‘premenstrual cold or headache’ returned many hits. I’ll include some excerpts in an entertainments entry.
Yesterday was a good day. Several next task chores I’ve been putting off required much less time and energy than I feared. I got a fine start, thanks, in part, to a productive errands trip and to my daughter, M--.
Weather / Phenology:
High 50’s - low 60’s. Pleasant. Partly cloudy.
One nasty bit: One of the animals (Boo, I think) coughed up some phlegmy liquid that contained one perfect round worm. (I hate to even write about this but I keep track of everything here.) All four mammals received de-wormer yesterday. Boo is a dream to give meds to: I used the three-treat trick that no dog can seem to resist. The two elder cats didn’t fight too hard - Toby really wanted to chew his tablet but was otherwise cooperative. (With cats, you have to pry open the mouth, place the pill at the back of the tongue, clamp the muzzle shut and then stroke the cat’s throat in order to encourage swallowing.) Braveheart, our youngest cat, was having none of it. He spit that pill 4-5 times. He’s had meds, including de-wormer, before and I don’t remember him being that difficult. Apparently he’s just big enough to offer a good fight now.
On a more enjoyable note, the chickens and the garden were well tended on Friday too. (See accomplishments below.)
Mood Summary:
Better. I didn’t notice any real irritability. My eyes were all red for much of the day and I could feel this “cold” coming on.
Ch- had another headache; the first in a long time. I just used the lj tags function to search for his most recent episode. I could only find that first post where I detailed the situation. Either he’s had headaches on days that I didn’t journal, (which is likely considering the long gaps of this summer and autumn,) or he hasn’t had anything severe since June 9th.
When I came home from doing the grocery shopping with M- (at about 8:30 pm) the house was dark and the two males were hunkered down in the living room watching ‘The Daily Show’. (Jon Stewart is our idol.) When I flipped on the lights, Ch- complained. I thought he was just tired. R- came up to help me make mac & cheese and hot dogs for dinner. Ch- wanted that very badly but started crying when he got up off the floor. He said something to the effect of, “Oh. Its going to be one of my bad headaches.” I suggested that we hold off on dinner until he could rest in the quiet for a while. He became very upset and told me that was exactly what he didn’t want. I had to carefully explain that none of us would eat until he felt better; that he would NOT miss the meal. He started to go up the stairs but I stopped him to give him some motrin. I told him that I’d come up in an hour but he could come down before that if he felt better.
When I checked on him, he was out cold. He grunted at me when I tried to wake him. I asked him if he wanted to sleep some more and he said yes. I returned to the main floor, thinking he was out for the night. R- and I agreed to make some hot dogs and hold off on the mac & cheese. (At that point R- figured he’d be making it for breakfast.) I asked M- if she wanted some hot dogs. She said yes but she also wanted the mac & cheese now that she had been promised some. (We don’t have it very often anymore because its just not very healthy. It’s a big treat around here.) I made the stuff and then immediately washed out the kettle in case Ch- awakened.
R- & I hung out and watched a little CSI. I ran out of energy at about 11:30. We picked up a little, turned out the lights and headed for the stairs. Ch- was on the way down, ready for his dinner. Without missing a beat, R- & I turned back to the kitchen and cheerfully made a second dinner. Ch- dozed in the chair while we cooked; we thought he might be out again by the time we finished but he made it - just barely. He finished every bit quickly and then went back to sleep. The end.
Accomplishments:
Lots. I started out by taking a thorough bath and preening a little. Then I went off on a productive, stream-lined, errands run. (I dropped another 27 items at the thrift store, purchased de-wormer, deposited a check, shopped for hard goods (like toilet paper & cleansers) at Target, bought cigarettes at the gas station and returned home by noon.) I worked outside for a few hours. M- helped me repair the greenhouse roof and install some excellent timers on the lights for the chicken coops. Ch- helped me clean out the garden beds and pick up the yard when he got off the bus. I balanced the checkbooks and kept the house pretty nice. I planned our week’s meals and shopped at the grocery. All in all, a good day.
