Limping through our first day of virtual school.
Weather / Phenology:
It took forever for the sun to come up this morning. Because I’ve been sleeping from about 3-4 am to about 10 am for most of the summer, I hadn’t realized that sunrise these days doesn’t happen until about 6:30 am. It mattered because I stayed in Anoka last night. I very much enjoyed my time with my two friends but after they retired, the night felt incredibly long. I should have skipped the late afternoon beers but I guess I must have been reluctant to let summer go without one last late-night on the patio. In any case, I didn’t skedaddle with enough time to beat the evening. I won’t drive the Saturn after dark so I was stuck for it. I was pretty zombie-fied by 4:30 but didn’t dare fall asleep. (‘Had to be home in time to take over for R- so he could go to work.) I felt pretty disconnected on the drive but not overly tired. It was quite chilly and misty all the way home. Later, when Ch- and I were doing a supplemental science experiment, I noticed the day was bright, sunny and verging on hot. Ah, September in MN.
Mood Summary:
My mood is good. Virtual school went really well today. Yes, I am tired and I will be gratefully heading for bed soon. (I got about an hour of sleep this morning once I got home and then another hour and a half after we finished up for the day.) There is one bizarre problem - I have apparently pulled a muscle in my thigh or hip…or I’ve irritated my sciatic nerve. I’ve been gimpy all day and I know I didn’t do anything to injure myself. My best theory is that I pushed a little too hard on the yoga yesterday morning and then slept funny. I also know that I want it to let go.
Ch- is a bit fragile and weepy - all of this is so new for him. When he failed to spell one word properly as I dictated his spelling list to him, he got a little hysterical. He’s not in bed yet. I think he’s feeling a strong need for comfort, structure and control.
Five Gratitudes:
1) Hanging out with Mz K- last night.
2) Ch-‘s phone call with young master L- after we finished with classes for the day. “Hi. Yeah. No it was great! Especially science …” He then outlined our aquifer experiment with a great deal of excitement in his voice.
3) R- made wonderful chocolate chip cookie while I was out and about last night.
4) My sourdough starter is alive and thriving. I “fed” it twice today and it’s already successfully doubling its own bulk. It won’t be long before I can attempt to use it to make bread. I’m hoping to do some cooking tomorrow. Maybe I’ll make the brown bread with Ch- just for fun. (It’s not a sourdough - in fact it’s not even a yeast bread.)
5) Root beer. The only consecutive-days task that I didn’t screw up in the last 24 hours is the one that requires me not to have more than two diet pepsis in any given day. If it weren’t for this glass of root beer that I am enjoying, I think I would have cracked.
Accomplishments:
Today we made a push to get our hands on each school subject and there were several technical glitches that I didn’t figure out until mid-day. Tomorrow, I think, we will concentrate on the routine and the scheduling of the whole day - not just the classes. Beyond school, and this journal entry, I’ve accomplished nothing. It doesn’t bother me though … I knew going in that the first couple of days would be really challenging. Familiarity with the system will cut the necessary time and effort way down. Off to sleep. I hope everyone is well.
