I have more lowbrow methods of communing with the local fauna. I feed them donuts. The shop on the corner sells them $2 for a baker's dozen late at night. There are usually about five in a bag that I want to eat, so a couple of days ago I tossed some out on the front and back lawns to see what would happen to them. The first couple of times, they disappeared without any chance for me to observe what had happened to them, but I eventually managed to see some small birds pecking at one. Eventually, I observed a squirrel pick up a donut, perch on the picket fence, eat part of it, and then tuck the remainder in between two posts. After some birds came and pecked at it some more, the squirrel returned, picked up the donut, and carried it across the street, up a telephone pole, half a block along the telephone wire, down another pole, and into a tree.

Yesterday, which was cool and foggy, I threw another donut out onto the front lawn while Rocky the Wonder Cat was perched nearby, and he went over to investigate. He licked it, then took several bites, and was eventually joined by the neighbours' other cat, allowing me to get a picture of the two of them, one of whom turned around to face me with a very guilty body posture. Since then, what remains of that donut has been untouched. I don't know if it's because of the weather or because the cats left it there as bait.
