You know you've gone stir-crazy when an earthquake has you feeling nostalgic.

The east coast of the US just got hit by, at first estimate, a 5.9 earthquake. My house shook and rumbled for a good 15 seconds, which is long by earthquake standards. And all I could think, once I'd made sure no one was hurt and there weren't immediate reports of severe damage, was how much I miss living in Japan.

For perspective, there was a 6.0 earthquake yesterday in Sumatra and a 7.1 in Vanuatu two days before that. As earthquakes go, this was somewhat run of the mill, only notable for being near major population centers and the heart of the US government complex.
