And yet more snow (and yet more dullness)

Feb 02, 2008 11:02

It's been the whitest winter here in the foothills since I moved up here five years ago, almost all the snowfall in the last week. We're on our third day this week of  steady snowfall (Tuesday. Thursday. Today.) Today's flakes haven't yet covered the recently shoveled walkway to the garage, but it's been sticking there and on the cleared bits of the drive.  Mostly prepping for the two upcoming bookfairs, with breaks for swapping out unloved BPALs so I can get some of the new Lupercalias I got to sniff at Will-Call last week. That's woprking out happily, but the mail deliverer seems to have decided that a little snow on the highway is an automatic pass on actually delivering to the mailbox at the foot of the hill. Grump.

Random updates:

Biggest News -- B has finally accepted we should retire from the book co-op ($300/two days a month plus all the aggravation you can use!) so we've given notice and I'm giddy with delight. I still get to do the schedule for a couple more months, but the light at the end of the tunnel is glorious!

Went down to LA last week via Bakersfield, happily combining a visit to the Aged P and my second pass at BPAL Will-Call plus a stop at Dark Delicacies, where I found one of the last few bottles of The Oval Portrait (v. nice and I'd swapped mine away foolishly). Will Call was again a pleasure. There were a few of the older Lunacy Tees available from the Trading Post and I was able to pick up a green Hunter Moon (at discount, thanks lab!) that I'd been wistful about missing. Wonderful to get to sniff all the new Lupercalia scents and decide against  quite a few (and in favor of some others I wouldn't have expected). Also quite taken with a couple of unreleased samples that I now covet, in particular Wensleydale (No it does NOT smell of cheese, for the Wallace and Grommit fans), Jasmine Cottage and of course, Snow, Glass Apples (though it's mostly just apple in the bottle...ran out of skin to test).

In knitting news, I have successfully turned the heel of my first sock! Twice, because the leg was too long and I needed more yarn for the second sock. The back of B's new sweater is completed and I'm almost to the neck in the front (love knitting in the round!). No progress on the Viking cable pattern from hell although I only have two more rows to get to the plain braid cable up the front. Masses of lovely yarns awaiting further development, so I need to finish either the socks or B's sweater soon. (I think the socks will win, as being quicker).

Reading has been spotty...finished Patrick Leigh Fermor's A Time of Gifts and current bedtime soporific is Traveller's Tales; episodic and easy to  put down at the end of a selection.

Back to reducing the current heaps of books awaiting dust jacket wrapping. One pile down, two to go. I can see the whole window in front of my desk now!

Happy weekend. Here's hoping we all have power and internet access throughout!
