I've gotten very lucky at thrift shops - I have five pairs of dr. martens that cost me less than $30 altogether, and I once picked up a pair of $100 Armani Exchange jeans at a thrift store for $6.

As far as regular retail stores, two summers ago I got a Dooney and Bourke handbag that was originally $210 for $45 at Macy's. I was working for the fine jewelry company that rents space inside of Macy's, so I was there daily to watch as things got marked down. It got to about 70% off, and then I had earned $10 in Macy's Money (employee 'cash' for opening credit accounts) that I applied towards it.

I'm waiting for a white sale deal at Target. The last time I bought sheets there (their Home brand, recommended by Real Simple) they were on sale and compared to expensive sheets they were a real bargain--very soft and smooth. I'll get another set when the sale starts.

But recently I scored two free hotel nights just because I had to call a manager at home on Christmas Eve because the desk clerk had been missing for over an hour and there was nobody to check us in. They comped our rooms. That wasn't really a skill, just me being too tired and cranky to go out and find another hotel to stay in.

got a large Sherpa pet carrier for $3 at goodwill

it still had the tags attached.

it was a good score, there's NO way I'd buy one of those new.

I actually scored a massive deal on them at a PetCo in Anchorage before (Where prices are notoriously marked higher than anywhere else). It was all thanks to misstocked and mislabeled items. I certainly didn't get it for $3 (which is totally lucky for you and I'm extremely jealous!) but I did get it for $30 less than their actual price when I refused to buy it when it was ringing up more than the price listed on the shelf where I found it.

I have no idea. I'm still surprised it was posted. I stayed up as late as possible hoping to babysit it through, and finally went to bed. It was deleted by the time I checked. I've emailed the mod and I'm asking members I'm friends with to give me the rundown.

Best Buy did a deal where if you brought in items for food donation they gave you a discount, and I think they may do this semi-regularly. I'm not sure they're the best place to go, however.

Vizio brand tvs are one of the highest rated brands in customer satisfaction, they are walmart's brand, and sold exclusively at walmart. my fiance and I bought one for his parents last christmas, a 32inch for approx. $450. I'm sure the prices have come down even more since then.

I second this. My grandparents just bought one, and my father bought one as well... and my grandpa and my dad are the biggest cheapskates ever. There's no way either of them would have bought one if it weren't great quality *and* super inexpensive.

Just wanted to say hi and thanks for making this community! I like poor_skills but I have definitely not posted stuff before for fear of sounding too... well off? I don't know. I'm not dirt poor but I like saving money (grad school = expensive!) Poor_skills also helped me learn things just about living on my own for the first time as a 23 year old in a new state! I'm sure I will learn lots from the community, too.

As for any finds... nothing huge yet, but I did get a buy one get one free of my favorite mascara at Rite Aid last week! Pretty stoked on that.
