[There is the sound of a spray of water, followed by a clunk as the comminucator is dropped and hits the floor. Chris can be heard in the background pawing at his face and chirping in a very dismayed tone.]

Why does the device do that? Am I being punished? I... I have not done anything wrong! I have violated no regulations! You pricks may not be ( Read more... )

I guess other people have--have already filled you in, huh?

Yes, I have already been "filled in". It is quite an annoying function.

I am doing fine. I have mostly been... hiding. In my room. I don't quite know what to do with my free time... back in the slums I spent it fiddling with scrap, building technological devices... and other things. But there's not much scrap to work with here.

Have you asked the crew if--if there's any scrap you could get at that...well, y-you know, that's not...hanging out in the open were we can find it.

I mean.

If that doesn't work...well...

Well, what did you do in--in your free-time before the slums? You know. Back--back home.

I was... much younger back then. At least twenty of your human years younger... maybe more. I don't recall how long we were trapped in our disabled ship prior to arrival. My time was spent with more innocent craft, mostly raising my son, prior to coming to the slums.

So, you--you really like making things.

You're an artisan?

Or--or an engineer?

More of... more of an engineer, I would say. I like building things out of junk and spare parts... good Poleepkwa tech if I can get my hands on it... and I was also familiar with biochemistry. I had the fortune of being very well-educated prior to coming to Earth, unlike most of the Poleepkwa with me. They became bottom-scraping scavengers... it was a very sobering experience.

People will--

I mean--in--in the same situation...

It--

That--

I-It happens with people, too. That--t-that's my...understanding.

It's--it's hard adjusting to--to living here, too. I wish...I-I wish I knew where to tell you to go.

There's always deck 12. I've found tons of--of random stuff, there. Uhm, and--a-and if you ever need to weld anything or--or, youknow, need some heat, you're free to--to use the kitchen Sergei's.

Deck 12? What is up there? No one has ever mentioned it to me...

[And he hasn't gone looking himself because of his fear of stumbling into restricted areas.]

They--

What? Really?

[And he could have sworn that was standard Elegante Greeting. You know, 'Welcome, you're stuck here until you disappear, you can't die, the captain is crazy and you can get all your needs filled down in the junk piles of Deck 12.]

It's--well, it--it's filled with suitcases. And there's rooms with just junk in them. You can take whatever you find. It's not--w-well, it's not trash, it's just unorganized heaps of stuff.

[Pauuuuuse. Holy shit Chris is going to go over there so fast.]

...Thank you. That is most valuable information. I will be sure to visit Deck 12, it sounds like it could be worthwhile.

Heh, that--that's just what you wanted to hear, huh?

Man, I--I was sure someone had told you about that already. I'm sorry--I should've mentioned it sooner.

Do not apologize. This is potentially some of the first good news that I have heard since being here. You have been a very big help to me since I arrived... do you need anything? Maybe I could help...

[No, that does sound like something Herz should apologize for. He'd squandered that information and if he'd just told him about it sooner, he wouldn't have spent weeks hiding in his room with nothing to do.]

I-I don't really need anything, but--but thank you.

I, uhm, I-I'd like to know how you're doing? How, uhm, If you--you find anything good. If you make anything, that sorta stuff.

Yes, I can do that. I... I don't really know what I'll make, it depends on what I can find... but if I produce anything worthwhile, I will let you know.
