I have discovered something... very odd during my recent foray into Deck 12. It appears to be a small instrument made of durable, polished wood... with strings on the front. It curves in oddly at the center, and there are dark black markings in the middle of it too. It has a long neck and four strange pegs near its tip. I also found a strange bow ( Read more... )

That's, uh, that's a violin.

If--if--if you hold down one of the strings and run the bow over it, the-t-the pitch of the string changes. Like, the pitch of the note.

Hmm. Interesting. My kind didn't have anything like this...

[He's going to try it out.]

Have you been doing well?

It--i-it can be really beautiful. Well, uhm, wh-when played by the right person.

I've been good, though. Real good.

[Booooyfriiiiiend.]

I will have to practice, then. I suppose I shall not break it down into its various components.

Oh? That is good! It is always nice to hear you in good spirits.

Thh-tha-thanks, Chris.

I, uh, I-I think there's gotta be book or something in the library a-a-a-about learning how to, how, how to play the violin. Plus, you could find some CDs with--w-with, uh--that have, y'know, people playing on them.

A book? They can teach you how to play these? Impressive, it seems quite complicated.

[But it would be helpful, seeing as he doesn't even know how to hold it correctly at the moment.]

Well, it, uh, it'd start at beginner's level. I'd think.

I dunno, I've--I-I've--I've never played a musical instrument before, m'self.

Yes, that makes sense. Learning to play this does seem like it would be layered. And humans listen to this kind of thing to relax, yes?

Sometimes. I-I mean, there--there's all kinds of music. Not just...relaxing ones.

You sound like you have a fascinating recreational culture. All my kind did was scavenge and bicker, mostly. Not very relaxing.

We, uh, w-we-we don't like to be bored, no.

[Chris doesn't sound like any of 'his kind'...but Herz doesn't know how to say so without sounding rude or making light of what must be a tough subject for his friend.]

...so, uh, have--h-have you listened to much, uh, Earth music?

No, not much... although the girl, Mikaela, did give me a CD at one point. Are there any genres in particular you would suggest?

Not--n-not anything called 'Rap'. That stuff isn't very musical, uhm, in-i-in my opinion. Outside that, though, I guess--I-I guess I'm not really picky.

I like Country.

"Rap"? It does not sound... enticing. Country? Does it have ties to a certain landscape or location?

Rap is like...i-it's spoken word to a beat instead of--of, like, singing. Which sounds cool, but it's usually about crime and--a-and hurting or having sex with women. I dunno. I--I-I've never liked it.

Country is like...it's something that came from the southern states of America. Here, uh, lemme...

[Yes, he's got a country CD on hand. Have the first verse and chorus of Don't Take the Girl.]

... Oh, I believe the Nigerians in the slums listened to something like that...

[And anything they like, he hates. He listens to the song.]

... I like that much, much better than "rap".
