Why don't people like M. Night Shyamalan's movies? Granted, even I am almost getting tired of the whole super twist ending(his next twist should be no twist at all), but those are really half the fun of the movie, is trying to figure it out in the end. It's like watching a murder mystery...You just can't watch the show without trying to figure out who did it and it's not as fun if you don't.
It seems to me that a lot of people are upset by how slow paced his movies are. These people are stupid. Movies don't always have to have a lot of action to be good. Let's imagine some of his movies with action, shall we?
Unbreakable: Bruce Willis in tights fighting Samuel L. Jackson in his flying laser chair.
Signs: Mel Gibson uses his Rod O' God to teach the aliens the gospel...medieval style
Sixth Sense: Haley Joel Osment pulls out a magical blessed sword and starts hacking through ghosts.
The Village: The beasties make the occasional sweep of the town looking for the strongest warrior to fight their own for bragging rights and a trophy.
Yeah...I don't really see any of those working out to well. The thing is, M. Night is actually very good at what he does. He tells a story and he tells it in a way that you can actually understand where the characters are coming from. Now, I understand that some of that is also the actors, I really wouldn't have cared for Unbreakable if Samuel L. Jackson was replaced by, say...Damon Wayans. Wouldn't have worked. But without the Director these actors just stand around earning too much money.
Also, another complaint that I hear about his movies are that they are all the same. In a way, I can almost understand this. There is the introduction-something spooky happens-suspense-revelation-REAL revelation. Again, there's nothing really wrong with this. The man has found a formula that works for him and he is using it. I would rather see a movie that the Director was comfortable making then seeing one that they had no idea what to do. Another aspect of this complaint is that they are all the same plot-wise. ...what?!
Superheroes exist in the real world
Kid sees dead people
Monsters out in the forest
Aliens are real and they are here
Storybook characters coming to life
How in the hell are these similar? I just don't see that at all.
I guess what I am trying to say is that I really like his movies and I wish people would stop being so critical when they have no idea what they are talking about.
