The Cave
2005
Rated PG-13 for intense creature violence.
I was really looking forward to this movie ever since it came out and I finally got the chance to watch it last week. I was disappointed and that makes me sad.
In Romania there is a 13th century church built high up in the mountains that a group of archaeologists find and discover that is was built on top of the what seems to be the worlds largest cave network in the world. They hire a team of cave divers to go in and explore and map this cave. This team encounters an ecosystem that has developed on it's own over the millenia completely separate from the rest of the world, so the animals that they encounter in the caves are nothing like they've seen before. During an incident the path they took in is blocked by a landslide and so they have to find another way out of the caves while trying not to get eaten.
Sounds like a simple, enjoyable plot, right? You would think so, but then they decided to take it one step further and make it stupid by adding a mutagenic parasite that is actually turning the divers into the giant bat creatures they are mostly encountering. LAME!!!! Now don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of mutagenic anythings, but there was absolutely NO REASON to turn this movie into one of them. Why take a perfectly good plot and ruin it with something like this?! Other than this one horrible mistake, the movie was actually quite fun though. I will probably end up buying it because I don't feel it was a waste of my time, just a good movie with a poor decision in it. There were several parts where I was almost feeling claustrophobic just by watching the divers moving around in the extremely tight conditions while things are trying to eat them...spooky. All in all, I would recommend this movie to most people as a simple way to enjoy an evening without expecting a whole lot.
Acting: Average Hollywood, nothing outstanding but not bad.
Directing: Pretty good. A lot of nice angles to show just how enclosed they are.
Plot: Would have been great if not for those stupid parasites.
Special Effects: One thing I will admit, those bat things were amazing.
