Happy Babblings

We watched Wrestlemania last night and it was fun. My Hardy brother won! (yes I cheered for Matt even as a heel; his brother gets all the attention so I like to give Matt some luv) And I got to see all the great moves from the Undertaker match. It was really well done, I even liked HBK's parts. Rey got his new costume reveal though alas we didn't get to see much of him. I guess that is to leave more time for the Undertaker match so it is okay this time.

And from professional wrestling we go to books. I really don't know what kind of transition there is available because those are generally unrelated topics. Well, except for when Mick Foley writes.....those are good books too.

Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
I wanted to read this because its one acknowledged by just about anyone I know as good and I hadn't gotten around to it yet. Well, they are all right, it is a absolutely wonderful read. Quick and easy and fun but not always light. There are some darker topics even though the book as whole is uplifting. As a girl of course I can really identify with the mother/daughter relationships. I don't think boys would be lost in reading this though. The way the vignettes are woven together is well done and I applaud Amy Tan. Because I should be, I will be looking to read more of her books soon.

Friday by Robert Heinlein
I saw the cover of this and remembered my dad had a copy on the shelf when I was young and going through his collection. I did not read it then (too bad, it would have wonderfully warped my sense of sexual preferences) but picked it up recently from the library. I almost did not finish it. Not that Heinlein is a bad writer but the character of Friday is well, a bit of a Mary Sue in some ways. John warned me that yes she represents Heinlein wanted woman so she is liked by everyone. And she is super-competent. This is pretty bad in the first half of the book as far as the almost Mary Sue goes. But it lessens and the story becomes interesting and it wasn't half bad. I've been told there are better Heinlein books and so am working on reading those as well.

The Poyson Garden by Karen Harper
A mystery series with Elizabeth I as the detective. It was light-hearted and fun, though not necessarily historically accurate. I think it is pretty good at leaving most events as they happened by the behind the scenes is by need made up. The secondary characters are not fully formed but it is the first book. Elizabeth herself would get more round as a character through more books. I liked the book enough to pick up the second one on my return trip to the library. We will see if it continues to delight.

There was also an audio book, Flow My Tears the Policeman Said by Philip K. Dick, but the fourth cd refused to play in anything I tried it in, car, computer, or Playstation. I told the library that when I returned it and looked for it in book form, alas it was checked out. We'll catch that one at a later date then.
