Bad writing of neat images

I realized today that I am slogging through my latest book, Mainspring. It is that old show not tell that the author is not quite up on. And the main character reads like a over-actor (where his emotions are right there but so obviously fake that the suspension of disbelief never happens). That said, the images and ideas are interesting enough that I will finish it. Especially like the one with the Romans using a gear setup to kill criminals rather than crucifying them, making the Christ story fit the steampunkish mechanical religion of the world. And the equator being a big wall with brass teeth at its top, made so by the clockmaker God so it can turn in perfect time along the orbital rails.
So reading, condensing my stuff before the parents get back, and watching tv with my brother, work, making cheaters pineapple upside down cakes (oh dear god they are good and I am so making again).....life keeps going well.
