This is the recipe that goes to the new project me and John are working on... Cooking for Gamers.
Stereotypical game night fare is chips, soda, and pizza. For the same amount of money and just a little effort, you can instead feed your group some wonderful food. Cooking is just another form of magic and nowhere near as scary as the top level of the wizard's tower.
Cowboy Pie
A southwestern variation on shepherd's pie with cornbread covering
Worth 100 XP* and uses both the stove and oven with a casting time of about 40 minutes
Ingredients:
Shortening
1 Tbs oil
2 handfuls of shredded cheese (your preference)
Bottom:
1 lbs. Ground Beef
1 can (15 oz) Black Beans (drained)
1 can (15 oz) Corn (drained)
1/2 onion, diced (this means cut up into small bits)
1/4 cup Bbq sauce or 1 pckg Taco Seasonings
Top:
1 pckg Cornbread mix
1 egg
1/3 cup milk
(the egg and milk are based on package directions so if your mix is different use what it says)
Hardware:
8X8 glass casserole dish
Large pan
Spatula (of doooooom)
Can opener
Spoons
Measuring cups
Medium Bowl
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees (or what is says on cornbread mix). Grease the 8X8 glass casserole dish with a thin layer of shortening.
Heat about a tablespoon of oil in a large pan. In the pan, brown the beef so that no pink is remaining. Add cut up onion and heat until onion is transparent. Then, add the can of beans, can of corn, and Bbq sauce (or seasonings). Mix together well.
Transfer this mixture to the greased casserole dish. Use spatula to even out and make top flat without compressing mixture.
In medium bowl stir the cornbread mix with milk and egg. Once evenly mixed, pour the batter on top of the meat mixture and use mixing spoon to spread out. If bottom peeps through a little bit, it is fine since bread will expand.
Put dish in preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes (unless otherwise specified on cornbread's instructions).
Remove from oven. Sprinkle top with shredded cheese and let stand until cheese is melted.
Cut up and eat.
