Ethan because Dr. Ethan on Saturday- it was a windy and cool day, with mild splatters of rain.
The day was a lot of running around for me. I started with an early trip to go Mother's Day present/flower shopping with Sally- got home and arranged all the flowers (red roses and white/pink wax flowers), then got Ethan up. We got cleaned up then packed up the flowers etc, picked up the cake, got the cake and flowers over to the Lexington, then hightailed it to Northrup Auditorium for the pre-ceremony pictures.
The ceremony itself was nice in the stolid fashion of the U of M. The speakers ranged from solemn to playful, the music was great, and I cried through half of it. I was smiling so hard I thought my face was going to split from the strain of it. (I'm tearing up just thinking about it.) We lingered on the Northrup Auditorium steps and took pictures amid the jostling crowd for a while, then retreated to the Lexington for the party.
I love the Lexington. It's kinda old-school, but I love it all the same. We had the small front room behind the bar, with the stained glass windows and the dark paneling; it's a nice venue for a party. The food was excellent, and Gary's cake was fabulous (he remembered to not put nuts on it, for once!). Sally made party favors- small ribbon-tied boxes with M&Ms (for the U of M) and a pile of fancy cards for people to write Ethan notes- Erin will be making a big scrapbook for Ethan to commemorate the event, once we get all the pictures etc printed. We sent the moms home with the table flowers (bonus round- less fragile vases to pack!). We had two great servers, including one very pregnant lady named Gretchen; we tipped them outrageously.
Everyone seemed to have a good time, which was great...I'll admit to being nervous about planning things; not that it was an ad-hoc affair, but the day was so important to me I wanted the details to be perfect. I think I came close, close enough to feel some pride for it.
Sunday morning Mom and Katie Lu and I went to the Shepherd's Harvest Sheep and Wool Festival. It's basically a yarny paradise of booths, with some animal petting and state fair food in there too. I treated myself to a hank of Briar Rose yarn- there's 550 yards, enough for a hat and mittens and scarf set if I watch it closely. It's this gloriously variegated set of greens with tinges of maroon and copper and black. Gorgeous stuff! Mom got a pile of lovely cream wool for a sweater.
Sunday afternoon was a small barbecue at Mom and Dad's for Mother's Day. I brought my swift and ballwinder and we sat outside, drinking beer and teaching the girls how to use the yarn-go-round. We then ate ribs and cimi salad and rosemary-garlic potatoes, and lemon cake for dessert.
It was a wonderful weekend. But now I must continue packing. At least I can see the end of the boxes...
good times!,
graduation,
crafty
