We went camping this weekend, meeting Ted at Nelson Dewey State Park in WI. It was about an equal drive for all involved, and looked like a cool park. It was wooded and cool and very nice, and very full. We ended up with a good site, close to the bluff edge and with not that many neighbors. We did have one loud group nearby, but not too bad overall.
We made fires and campfire-cooked, drank beer and talked and talked and talked. Did a little hiking, went to a nearby town and walked though a corn maze. It was its opening weekend, and we were the first group to make it all the way through the maze. We got free pop, which we needed after walking through a cornfield for an hour and a half.
Late Saturday night, full of steak and roasted sweet corn and garlic-and-olive-oil couscous and red wine, we went out to the picnic area on the other end of the park, quietly to avoid getting busted by the rangers. We hiked a short trail out to a park bench on top of the bluff where we could see the stars. It was only a little cloudy and the view was breathtaking. There was very little light pollution out there, and so may stars were visible I could only identify a few constellations in the slew of stars overhead. That was my favorite memory from that trip- siting on the park bench, head all the way back, staring at the Milky Way and talking softly about infinity.
good times!,
