I want to start a virtual book club with my online friends, new, old, law, job, etc. Anyone and everyone. And if they want to bring in friends, hey, the more the merrier.
Here's the notion I have so far:
1. Any type of book is fair game. Yes, even Twilight, although it makes my soul bleed and you'd better be prepared for some invective. For me, book groups are about finding stuff you'd never pick up on your own. So, multi-genre.
2. One a month. I know people are busy, but anyone should be able to read at least one book a month. If you're a voracious reader and you hate the book that's chosen that month, you'll still have time to read stuff you like.
3. We'll run a poll to select the book of the month. The internet is this wonderful sparkly thing that makes anonymous polls really easy to run.
4. To prevent us from reading the same types of books, no book of the same genre back to back. So, no reading Twilight books for the next six months. Sorry.
5. Once a month, on a regularly scheduled day at a regularly scheduled time, we'll open a chat room and get together and catch up and discuss the book. Again, the internet is a wonderful shiny thing and I know how to do all of this for free.
6. There can also be a discussion board. I'm thinking a facebook page would be perfectly fine. Or a Yahoo! group. Also free.
7. I've been debating a "No one has ever read it before" clause, but I'm not sure how we'd manage to pick books considering I'm sure some people have read a metric crapton of books. So dunno.
Those are my ideas. I'd love to get this started. And, of course, if anyone has any ideas, we'll hammer out an actual agreement before we start and we can incorporate those then...
