In those specific situations it can be great; the issue with it as a "pre-planned" format is that unlike poker chip bardic, which can adapt to low energy filking reasonably well, with cat's cradle you end up just passing the ball around (or as happened at Rainbowcon, having it turn into a buckyball, where the person stuck with the ball after just having performed passes it to someone and asks them to do something). Those situations can be fun too, but they aren't really cat's cradle.
