An example of excellent parenting

Wednesday night I was making Madison a bottle, well, more precisely, she was tired and started following me around insisting (in her baby-like manner) that I start a bottle for her. She follows me to the sink as I wash the bottle, hugging both my legs and pushing her head between my calves. She follows me to the island as I add a bottle-liner to her bottle. She follows me to the counter as I start adding water and formula to the bottle. All this time she's making a slight whining, like I know I should have already had this bottle made and in her hand, but stops momentarily at each station, until she realizes there's yet another step before that bottle is ready.

So, I have the bottle ready, just have to put the nipple on, but I do things from the top down, meaning the large can of formula gets closed first (I do not want to drop that, it's expensive), then the bottle, then the water bottle. Formula closed, I place it on the counter, careful, don't want to knock the lidless bottle off the counter...

...oh crap!

The formula can bumps something else on the counter, which bumps the bottle. It falls off the counter, half of it spilling onto Madison's face, and then all of it hits the floor. Initially she is shocked, and for some reason she takes a step forward...

SMACK!

She slips and hits her face on the floor, and bawls. She's got her hand to her face, and the tears pour. I feel bad, and pick her up, and Jackie grabs paper towels to clean the floor; I take them to clean the baby, as Jackie wasn't aware the contents of the bottle started on the baby. As I'm wiping Madison's face and mouth, I notice a spot of red on the paper towel. I dab at her mouth, and get more red. My baby is crying, and her mouth is bleeding.

Now I feel horrible.

I dab at her mouth, try to check her teeth and gums and lips, but she doesn't want anyone near her mouth, and every time I attempt to pull slightly back to look at her, her arms reach out and grab around my neck.

I'm a horrible father. My baby is bleeding, and she just wants to be held...

After a while she decides she wants mommy, and Jackie takes her. The bleeding has stopped, apparently only a tiny cut on her lip where her tooth may have cut when she fell. The crying stops, we have a bottle for her now, and she calms down.

Except now she has a small swelling in her lip.

My baby's face is going to be swollen on her birthday...

Jackie finds an old frozen teething ring in the freezer (by the way, they're not supposed to be frozen, just cold), and thankfully she is glad to chew on it, which keeps it near her swollen lip.
We put her to bed shortly thereafter, she didn't put up the usual fight. Thankfully again, she is fine today.

I still feel horrible, though.
