we've been busy, that's why I've been quiet. There has been much work happening in the front garden. My mother and I have been weeding, sorting and planting quite a bit. We still can't fix the major problem though because we'd require a fence put up, and the guys have been busy dealing to the old aviary.
We had an aviary in the front garden. Yes, we did. It's not been used for at least the 15 years the Lee's had lived here, as far as we can tell, and that's largely based on the actual state of all the woodwork and fencing. Suffice it to say that we had a lower-level part of the yard, surrounded by falling-down chicken wire and covered with triffids make that acanthus.
We thought we'd build a deck, bringing the ground level up to the rest of the yard. But after consulting with the lovely people at Wellington Council, we found out we'd have to get a building permit, and that would cost twice the cost of the actual deck. Oh, yes. So back to the drawing board. We have put a fence around the outsides of old aviary, a proper one that's not falling down. The chicken wire is gone to the tip. The wild jungle of acanthus is gone too, replaced by a lovely concrete slab. Just under a metre down from the rest of the yard.
The timber that we'd scavenged for the use of the deck will be turned into benches, all around the sides. There is one right angle, so we can put a table there. The benches we use for the tent can double as extra seating. Some hanging baskets, a set of steps to get down, and we've got a seating area.
A brand new six-burner BBQ is going to do service, and some more work will be put into a stone oven to the side. I'll be able to bake proper bread! (Excitement)
I'll need to sew a shade sail, but that probably won't happen this year.
My dad and my husband have been working like demons. The kids have loved playing in the paddling pool. My mum and I have done house service. We're all in the mood for a celebratory glass of wine/grog tonight.
See you!
