He’d never admit it to anyone, especially not Wilson, but physical attraction wasn’t the most important factor in sex or relationships. Nor was intelligence enough for him.
Stacy had been gorgeous, but then, so were countless other women. She’d been brilliant, too, and that certainly had its appeal. But it was her wit and fighting spirit that he fell in love with.
Their verbal sparring turned him on like nothing else. Through their relationship, many arguments and debates went unresolved because a particularly nasty barb from her would result in a passionate kiss and move on to ripped clothing, unrestrained moaning and screaming and clawing, and end with breathless laughter at the position they’d found themselves in on the kitchen island or the dresser in the bedroom, and once, even against the piano.
He hated his leg for taking that away from them. He railed against a god he didn’t believe in for forcing her to make choices she never should have had to consider.
He couldn’t imagine her new life with Mark was anything but settling for less.
Her combative nature was so strong, he could hear her voice as he read the scathing lines put down in her neat hand. Memories of the life they had and the life they didn’t get to finish washed over him, and he leaned back on the couch and unbuckled his belt.
