Watch and Learn
The monkeys really pissed Dumbo off.
They made fun of him.
And seriously, they had no room to talk as far as ears, which was the main thing for a long time. His big ears.
He knew he had big ears; they were kind of hard to fucking miss, after all.
And the monkeys couldn’t fly with theirs, thank you very much, so his were better anyway.
And then, they stopped taunting about that, and came up with a better game.
Opposable thumbs, they jeered, allowed them to grasp things. Grip and pull and tug all they wanted. They stood outside his enclosure and snickered, showing him as they tugged and boohooing over his inability to do the same. Hell, they could even do much of this with their tails.
Dumbo watched them for a little while, then shook his head. "You clowns have no idea, do you?" he asked simply.
He sat on his stringy tail, stumpy unopposably-thumbed legs all out before him, and unfurled his trunk down between them, then looked at the assembled group. "Watch," he said, "and learn."
And then he demonstrated the ways in which their tiny flat noses were insufficient. They stared as he gripped and tugged. They gasped and he pulled and jerked. And then, when he put the end of his trunk down over and sucked, they groaned, and slunk away, beaten.
He pretended they were still there to demonstrate for; no sense stopping now, and doing it alone was less fun.
