Title: Recompense Pairing: KyuMin Genre: Angst, Hurt/Comfort Plot Summary: Having been abandonded by the one he loved unfathomably and left alone in a desolate house practically in the middle of nowhere, life at the moment was practically unlivable for Sungmin. It would be made even more so upon opening to the door to a mysterious stranger, which in turn opens the door to memories that had long been locked away.
Is it just by coincidence that the man is a total stranger and yet so familiar? Is it just by coincidence that Sungmin sees his face nearly every night in his dreams?
Would Sungmin remember him as the man who walked into his 'happy' life just months previous, ripping it apart by taking the one thing that he loves.
Six months. Six months is a long time, the time extended by almost double when you're waiting for something. Waiting with such an anticipation that you look out of your window every ten minutes or avoid any unnecessary sound that could affect your hearing....... A long time.
From the moment Kyuhyun's presence had left the house Sungmin felt the loss. To be precise, the passing of Kyuhyun would be more accurately described as the abandonment of his physical form, while his soul remained, etched into the wood that the house was made from and the fabrics that adorned the furniture. And his coat. Sungmin felt alone but there was hardly a moment that he felt a complete separation from Kyuhyun. If he ever did he'd simply slip on his coat that still smelt so strongly of him and then Kyuhyun was back. But that didn't stop him missing him. It started like a cancer on the first day, starting as an itching in his chest and spreading out further and further as the days passed. On the day he returned, he was almost completely taken over, his inside black and numb with prickly pins and needles.
The six months passed by with countless opportunities for thought and self reflection. For the first few days, he slept hardly at all but when he did his dreams were filled with images from the first time Kyuhyun came to his house. He was a stranger and was welcomed unconditionally by Kangin. Sungmin saw how Kangin had treat him like dirt, not withholding even when in the presence of Kyuhyun. He's witnessed how Kangin had instantly preferred the company of someone he had just met over his own. He'd been waiting for the opportunity. Is that how you act around someone you love? No, it's not, and Sungmin had come to see this. More painful than this were the constant images of abuse that played in his mind, not leaving no matter how much he screamed and willed them to. He saw the abuse before Kyuhyun came: the punches, kicks and bites that made up the physical abuse, and the incessant name calling and neglect that cause his emotional state to deteriorate. When Kyuhyun came the abuse was the was the same except he was able to see Kyuhyun's reaction which, in the early days was very little, but he could now see the look on his face and deduce the reason why he would leave the room. At the time it was happening, he was blinded by his hate for Kyuhyun that he was more angry that he was there witnessing it than the fact it was happening. To him it had become part of his life, but that didn't mean that it was open for anyone to see. In some ways it was sacred, something between him and Kangin; something that he could never explain. And for that to just be taken away was disastrous. His whole life and routine had been ripped in two. Not only that, but the one person who had given him company, no matter how distant, was gone and he was alone. Having Kyuhyun there the second time allowed him to experience a new kind of company. One of friendship and companionship. And it was innocent. He didn't know Kyuhyun so it was fresh and new. The distance between the two relationships was as wide as the sea.
Having had the opportunity to watch the scenes with an outsiders point of view, it was like it wasn't even him. His initial shock had had chance to subside and his mind had cleared. As his shock faded, realisation and understanding set in and with it, forgiveness. Not for Kangin, but for Kyuhyun. He now understood exactly why he did what he did and what he meant by telling him everything would be okay and that it was for his own good. He had begged Kyuhyun not to take Kangin, pleading and telling him he would die without him, and this was right after Kangin had had him knelt on the floor, a shot gun pointed directly at the back of his head......... He understood now. His eyes were clouded by fog but it burnt away. For everything, Kyuhyun was forgiven, thanked. That's what he was: thankful, and now all he wanted was for Kyuhyun to return to him. The feeling he had in the pit of his stomach was homesick. Homesick for the man who had become home to him.
Another thought on his mind was what Kyuhyun had said to he before he went: that he loves him. It had been so long since he'd heard these words said to him that it was as though they had been spoken in another language. But the question that plagued him was whether or not he loved him back. Sure he was fond and cared for him deeply, and this became clearer and clearer as the days passed, but did he love him? In all honesty he didn't know if he could feel love again. But there was something. He had become his only friend on the Earth and the only one he wanted to see, to speak to.
Winter soon passed with the thawing of the snow, bringing a crisp spring in which everything came back to life and colour painted the land once more. Everywhere was fresh; a new start. As the weeks faded away Sungmin found everything becoming more bearable. By the third week he'd managed to contact his mum over the phone but promptly hung up as soon as she spoke. She tried to ring back but he always ignored it. By the fifth week he rang again but this time he spoke, exchanging pleasantries and casual conversation. She had broken down begging him to tell her where he was but he refused, ensuring he was safe and living well; a slight exaggeration but she didn't have to know. He told he he'd come see her soon and then hung up. Precisely two months later he fulfilled that promise and he nearly didn't come back. Being home was nice and although the fuss made him nervous at first, he came to like it. As mothers do, she'd commented on how thin he was and stuffed him like a turkey at Christmas and sent him home with bags of food. She was right, he was too thin, a feature Kyuhyun had also picked up on so he vowed to gain weight. He'd never really had an eating disorder, it had just come about through mistreatment and habit.
By the fifth month, he'd gained a little weight and managed to go out and about, even if it was only for a walk. He had even been for his lank locks cutting, opting for a shorter style but still quite long. This was also around the time that he became even more desperate to see Kyuhyun. It had been constantly growing but five months was a long time. He could also feel somewhere inside that it wouldn't be long now. That had sparked off the incessant looking through the window for any signs of movement. He went out less but still continued to look after himself.
It was a day in summer when the birds were singing and the sun shining when a knock sounded at the door. A soft knock but loud enough that it set the house off trembling. Sungmin was ready, he knew it would be that day he would come. It was exactly a year since the first day he had come. After wiping his cereal bowl and putting it in to cupboard, he walked quickly to the door, moving around the bag that was placed near the door. His body was buzzing as he unlocked the door and when he opened it he quivered.
As expected, the man was stood with his back to the open door only reacting to anyone being there when Sungmin spoke softly. “K-Kyuhyun?” He enquired, his voice shaking. Turning his head to the side he looked at him through his peripheral before turning his head entirely, he body moving with it until his entirely body was facing him. He looked the same: tall and thin with dark hair, dark clothes. A gentle smile was on his face already and he spoke after some seconds of just looking and the small man before him.
“Hello Sungmin.”
He knew it was him but seeing him had been more of a shock that he'd expected so Sungmin stared, and when he realised it was definitely him, he carefully smiled back. The person he had been waiting so desperately for was finally here and in that moment, his aching stopped and everything became clear.
The birds were singing and Sungmin closed his eyes and listened to them. They'd been singing all though Spring and Summer but only know could Sungmin really hear the music his ears had been deaf to. They were entrancing and Sungmin could feel himself drifting away. He was brought back to earth with Kyuhyun's soft tones.
“How have you been?” He asked, his tone gently and friendly but almost impatient. There was a hint of desperation on the tips of his words but it was so slight it was barely there. Sungmin opened his eyes and looked directly into Kyuhyuns without faltering.
“I've been okay, just keeping busy. How have you been?” Sungmin replied, a little impatience mirrored in his voice.
Kyuhyun took a step forward. “You look well.” He looked down into Sungmin's eyes trying not to break the contact.
“I've tried my best,” Sungmin didn't move at all as Kyuhyun came closer. “I've tried to eat better and..... “ Kyuhyun ghosted his fingers over Sungmin's fuller cheek, an action he couldn't control as his impatience jumped. He wanted to know the answer to the statement he'd put to Sungmin before he left. “.........and I've even b-been out.”
“Great,” Kyuhyun whispered. He touched Sungmin's face fully by grazing over his skin and Sungmin's breath hitched and he closed his eyes again.
“K-Kyuhyun....” his voice was whispery and broken as if he was going over speed bumps.
“Yes Sungmin,” he whispered again.
“I-I've waited for so long........”
“I know.” He put his full hand on his face.
Sungmin breathed in sharply and opened his eyes. “T-take me away.”
Kyuhyun stroked his other hand over Sungmin's face and tilted his head upwards as there bodies were less than a foot apart. “You want to come with me?” His voice's cloak fell and his true desperation was unveiled. There was his answer. “You really want to?”
Sungmin looked quickly between Kyuhyun's eyes which were darker and deeper than before. He wanted nothing more in this moment than to be lost in them. He nodded and Kyuhyun's body seemed to drop, like all the tension had been taken away.
Seeing him and feeling him again, the words sounded in his head on their own. I love you. He didn't feel quite like he could say it yet but he knew it to be true. That was the reason why he had waited so desperately for him.
“Shall we go inside?” Kyuhyun asked hurriedly, ready to make plans.
“I'm ready now,” Sungmin replied, denying Kyuhyun's question which made his eyes widen.
“Now?” He asked surprised, dropping his hand's. He wasn't disappointed, just surprised. For him, they could go straight away. Sungmin nodded. Turning away he moved back into his house and grabbed his bag that had been waiting patiently, put Kyuhyun's coat on and slipped into his shoes. After taking one last look into the house, the cold, lonely house that never had been a true home to him, he closed the door and locked it. Kyuhyun's arm was outstretched towards Sungmin and he took the bag form him, placing it into his other hand and offering his now free hand to Sungmin who took it without a moment's hesitation.
“Then let's go.” Kyuhyun lead him down the path to the car that waited on the road. The same car as before. The day really was a beautiful day. Kyuhyun opened the passenger seat door and Sungmin climbed in, then he placed Sungmin's bag in the back and took his seat on the driver's side.
“Where are we going?” Sungmin asked, looking out to the road that stretched before them.
“Where do you want to go?” Kyuhyun asked, looking at Sungmin and taking the opportunity to scan his eyes over all his visible features.
“Anywhere........” Sungmin replied and Kyuhyun started the engine and started the car moving to their unknown destination. But they were together, and right at that moment, that was all that mattered to both of them. Sungmin was leaving behind his prison, the house that had provided him with nothing but cold and emptiness. Where ever he went would be full from this moment on so the destination really didn't matter. They were together. Sungmin had become home for Kyuhyun when he had come to the world not knowing what home was and when he was away he was homesick. Sungmin could see now that Kyuhyun was right, he was his angel. He'd given him is life back. Kyuhyun gave him a life that, in return, Sungmin could give to him.
I hope it isn't a disappointing ending. I wanted it to be short and simple. I hope it was okay.......... it may seem a bit strange but maybe I will do an epilogue......who knows?!
