Twenty-eight Ryeowook was successful and, much to everyone's delight, they were on the next plane home. It hadn't taken much convincing because their manager wanted to go home also. The plane journey was awful for Kyuhyun and his loyal supporters. You would think that Kyuhyun would feel somewhat at ease because he was on their way home, but it didn't. In some ways, it scooped more stress on top of him, as though he was at the bottom of a grave with the incessant falling of dirt upon him, and if he didn't reach his hand up now, he would be buried completely. Well he was reaching his hand up, but it was proving no use. The time passed impossibly slow, each minute making Kyuhyun's feet tap harder. They were banging loudly on the floor before Donghae finally spoke.
“Calm down Kyuhyun, this isn't doing you any good.” He was seated next to him and placed a comforting hand on his knee. Kyuhyun looked at him and saw the sincere care in his eyes but he couldn't fulfil his words. “Everything will be okay.” Donghae looked past Kyuhyun to Ryeowook and gave him a sad smile, then looked to the seat next to him that was filled by Siwon, currently being over dramatic as usual by making exaggerated sobbing sounds. Well, if nothing, it was entertaining.
The plain touched down at night, the dark of the sky blacking the windows. They completed all the tedious airport necessities In record slow time and headed out to the awaiting cars. Before climbing in Kyuhyun took a moment to take in some fresh air. The sky was clear, not a cloud in sight, stars polka-dotting the darkness. Everyone was happy to be back in Korea.
Unlike the other parts of the journey, the ride back to their apartments was much quicker. It usually was that way when you were coming closer to something you're dreading. When the car stopped in front of the block of flats where Kyuhyun's apartment was situated, Kyuhyun climbed out, followed by Donghae, Ryeowook and Siwon. Wrapping their arms around him they formed a group hug/smother Kyuhyun formation, squeezing him tightly because they knew how hard this was going to be. After stepping back, Siwon threw himself at Kyuhyun again, either feeling the need to hug him by himself or just because he felt truly sorry for him. Probably a mixture of both. In the other car, Zhou Mi was watching them through the tinted window, tutting and rolling his eyes. To him they were all pathetic. Hankyung was watching him with narrowed eyes. He knew something was going on and he wanted to get to the bottom of it.
Kyuhyun made it to his apartment quickly, not wanting to prolong the inevitable for too much longer because he realised that his heart couldn't beat at this speed for much longer. He heard every click and churn as he twisted his key in the lock, and the creak of the door as it opened made his hands clench. When he stepped through the door a frantic turn took over him and he rushed to Sungmin's door, dropping his bag with a harsh thud onto the floor and not even bothering to take off his shoes. With the slam of the front door, if Sungmin was a asleep he would be awake now.
“Sungmin?! Sungmin?!” Kyuhyun shouted into the silence, his only reply was undisturbed silence. Kyuhyun scanned his eyes over the apartment. “Sungmin, are you here?” He couldn't see him in either the living room of the kitchen so he moved in sharp movements to his door. “Sungmin, if you're in there, please, just speak to me.” He waited a few torturous moments before beginning to pound feverishly on the door. The pent up stress and worry had well and truly exploded, their aftermath messy and uncontrolled. “Sungmin, please, please, please. Just let me explain.” His voice was frenzied and almost manic. “You owe me this at least.”
There was more silence then the faint voice of Sungmin. “You explained once.” He sounded tired; worn out.
“Let me explain again!” Kyuhyun pleaded.
“You've explained once. You said it wouldn't happen again..... You lied.....” He sounded so distant like he wasn't even in the room.
“Sungmin it wasn't......”
“It wasn't you? Save it.....” there it was, Sungmin's full voice with the added bite of anger. He cut through Kyuhyun's words and in keeping with the pattern Kyuhyun cut him off.
“He grabbed me! He took me by surprise. He hadn't done anything in any other shows so how was I supposed to know. This isn't my fault!”
Sungmin was quiet for a few moments before speaking again. “Did you speak to him about us?”
“No, I didn't....”
“Well maybe you should have.....”
Kyuhyun's anger was building again at being blamed for this. “But he'd stopped for God's sake Min. I know, what do you want me to say? Tell me and I will say it.” Both of his palms were rested on the door and he pushed against it.
“I don't want you to say anything......” A simple, flat tone, spoken without any emotion. He meant it.
The words hung weights around Kyuhyun's neck which pulled him down, sliding against the door and falling into a crumpled mess on the ground. Like a toy without batteries, he lay discarded, motionless and useless. No more words were spoken that night; no more words were needed.
**
KNOCK KNOCK
Kyuhyun lifted his head groggily and looked around him in total disorientation. What? What is that? Where am I? All around him was the hallway and his body was on the floor. When the fog cleared out of his mind he remembered and wanted to slump back down but was stopped again boy more loud knocking.
KNOCK KNOCK. “Kyuhyun?! Open the door!”
Kyuhyun rubbed his eyes and pushed up off the floor, instantly regretting it as his body creaked an cracked. Note to self: Don't sleep on the floor.
“Kyuhyun?!”
“I'm coming!” He stopped them off angrily. The unlocked door was tugged open to reveal Eunhyuk and Donghae who both looked him up
and down entirely in sync then invited themselves in.
“So you've decided to knock on the door this time?” Kyuhyun asked sarcastically, a feature of his personality which hadn't been affected.
They both scanned his face for signs he had been crying while simultaneously looking around for signs of Sungmin. “We figured it best not to just walk in.... but don't get used to it....” Eunhyuk told him trying to lighten the mood, smiling afterwards but quickly letting it slide from his face. “Aaaaaaaaanyway..... how are things?”
A nod towards Sungmin's door was the answer and Eunhyuk and Donghae looked at each other then back to Kyuhyun with sad faces. They'd been expecting it but it didn't lessen the blow.
“Things are great!” Kyuhyun audibly replies in mock happiness. “Never better really!” He was getting worked up again and Eunhyuk could tell. Looking at Donghae he nodded his head at Kyuhyun then towards the kitchen. Donghae understood and stirred Kyuhyun away to the kitchen.
Wasting no time Eunhyuk marched to Sungmin's door and knocked on it, lending no care to whether or not he was asleep. He need to try to fix this, he couldn't stand to let it end this way. Tapping his foot he waited several moments impatiently before speaking. “Sungmin, I know your in there. It's Hyuk, please let me in. I promise, no Kyuhyun.” When there is still no answer he speaks again. “Are you really going to ignore me?..... Well, you asked for it.... you underestimate me.” Pulling out his bunch of keys he flicks them round one by one before settling on one with the initials 'LSM' on. Sliding it into the lock he turns it and pushes the door open. His eyes scanned the room then rested on the mound on the bed under the pink covers. He was ready to go in all guns blazing but it all dissipated when he saw him.
“Sungmin?” Eunhyuk asked closing the door and walking slowly towards him. He couldn't help the feeling of dread that filled him the closer he got. When he saw the covers move slightly he released a long breath and climbed onto the bed and shuffled towards the mound. “Sungmin?”
“My chest hurts,” the mound spoke, its voice wavering and low and once again full of exhaustion and emptiness.
Sliding closer and snaking an arm over him to pulling him flush to his chest, he replied: “I know.”
“I-I can't do it any more......”
“What can't you do any more?” Eunhyuk lowered his voice to a soft whisper.
“This. K-Kyuhyun and I. I can't do it any m-more.....” Sungmin pushed out although he was fighting back tears.
“But you haven't really tried.” Eunhyuk couldn't help but try to reason with him regardless of how broken he sounded.
“I have.” Sungmin's voice raised. “I've tried so hard! Since the beginning I felt like it wasn't right. I think that was what I needed to truly see.”
“Min don't say........”
Sungmin cut him off before he could try to change his mind. “Hyuk please, just stop.”
His final words sounded the most desperate and so Eunhyuk did keep quiet. Pulling him closer he hugged him even tighter.
**
“I'm not ready to give in but by the sound of his voice last night, I don't feel like it's any use any more.” Kyuhyun felt truly dejected.
Shaking his head, Donghae disagreed. “Don't think about that just yet. Hyuk is talking to him. Just wait and see how it goes.”
Kyuhyun couldn't force himself to see the light Donghae was eluding to. “I already know, I'm not going to delude myself.”
Donghae rested his hand on his shoulder and rubbed gently. He was about to speak again but Eunhyuk came walking over to them. Bypassing Donghae and looking straight into Kyuhyun's eyes he spoke slowly: “Sungmin wants to talk to you.” There was a sadness in his eyes that spoke a thousand words. Kyuhyun pushed up slowly, knowing what this meant and walked away without a reply. At Sungmin's door he knocked once as a warning then walked in. Over on the bed, Sungmin was sat upright now, looking intently down into his bedsheets.
“Min?” Kyuhyun cleared his throat. “Sungmin?” In the atmosphere the shortening of his name sounded wrong. He could tell that Sungmin was refusing to look at him but that didn't affect the rapid increase of his heart beat as he looked at him. Anger and sadness hadn't marred his beauty in the slightest.
Kyuhyun was about to speak again when Sungmin cut him of. “I want to end this. I can't do it any more.”
“Sung......” Kyuhyun began to plead.
“No!” Kyuhyun was blocked by this one sharp word. “I don't want to hear this. I know what you'll say and I don't want to hear it.”
His fears had been realised and he couldn't stay to hear the words any longer. His world turned black an the carpet quicksand that was trying to pull him in. When he turned to leave, words jumped into his throat - words he needed to know the answer to - and he half turned back. “Just answer me this: Did what I said to you before I left for China mean nothing?”
Sungmin's eyes began to pool with tears. When Kyuhyun received no audible reply at all, he completed his turn and pulled his feet from the quicksand and walked from the room. By the time the door was slammed closed, Sungmin was sobbing, burying his face into the bed-sheets.
Kyuhyun bypassed the men waiting in the kitchen, both stood up now and looking towards him, and entered his own room, slamming the door closed behind him.
