Summary: Angelus has an obsession.

He shifted his eyes from the florid face of the prosperous merchant and saw him. A slightly built young man with tousled, dusty brown curls and spectacles perched on the edge of the settee glancing nervously about him. He looked desperate to be gone from the crush of the party. Suddenly, the young man stood and hurried into the hallway. Angelus begged the merchant’s pardon, quickly said his thank you’s and good-bye’s to his hosts and left the house. He glanced right, then left but saw only emptiness, and he couldn’t catch his scent. Frustrated, he fed viciously on a prostitute on his way home.

He and Darla attended another soiree the following evening. The young man was there and then gone. He was furious. He couldn’t leave. Darla was watching him intently and his sire wasn’t pleased with his inattention to her needs. On the following night, he, Darla and Drusilla went to the opera. From his box, he saw the lad in a lower box to the side. He watched him furtively but sometime during the second act, he left the theatre.

Finally, two nights later the boy was at another party. Again sitting alone, looking a bit lost. Noticing that Darla was the center of attention in another group, he eased out of the company and drew closer. They boy abruptly stood and without thanking his hosts, he walked quickly to the door and left. Angelus managed to elude a very persistent young woman and slipped out of the house. He looked right and saw the boy almost running down the darkened, drizzled sidewalk. Angelus followed him and found where he lived. He watched a light go on in an upstairs room and slid further into the shadows. The light went out and Angelus slipped away.

The next evening, he waited in the shadows of a near-by alley and saw the light. He moved closer. The boy was sitting at a desk, apparently writing. The light from the lamp painted the young man’s face a soft rose and accentuated the sharp cheekbones of his thin face. Suddenly a moist tongue slipped from the human’s lips and it moved slowly back and forth over his lower lip as he concentrated. Angelus shivered. He had to have this boy. He had to possess him and keep him as his own. For the next two nights, he stood in the shadows, mesmerized by the boy’s beauty. His own desire was painfully obvious.

The light was out the next evening but Angelus had received an invitation to another party. Fortunately Darla and Drusilla had left London for Paris and shopping leaving him alone. He walked quickly toward his destination, as the image of the moist tongue darting in and out of those flushed full lips taunted him. Hopefully, the young man had been invited. He entered the home, spoke graciously to his hostess as briefly as possible and began to prowl the room. He was there! Again perched nervously at the edge of another hideously ugly sofa. Angelus strolled over to him and sat down. The young man turned toward him, a warm, seemingly satisfied smile brightening his beautiful face.

“Good evening, I’ve seen you at several parties. We must know many of the same people.” He reached out his hand. “I’m Angelus.”

The young man’s eyes flickered over the older man’s handsome face. He licked his lips and Angelus swore his heart beat. The boy clasped Angelus’ large, strong hand between both of his. “I’ve…I’ve seen you too. I saw you outside my window at night and wondered how long it would take you to introduce yourself. I’m William and I fell in love with you the first time I saw you.”
