This morning, I woke up at 8, all by myself, just in time to watch the women's final. Although Lindsay won the first set, I nearly developed an ulcer watching the second set, which she also almost won, only to have a SHITTY ASS call from an incompetent chair umpire. So then it went to three sets, and I couldn't handle it anymore, so I went to the bank. I sat in the drive through for about 30 minutes, and got home just in time to see Lindsay blow a match point so that Venus could win. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Then I watched Live 8. In case you're like the people at my work and live under a rock, Live 8 was a series of concerts today, July 2, around the world, to urge the leaders of the G8 countries (US, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, Canada, and Italy -- I think those are the G8 anyway) to take a significant stand against poverty in Africa. Coincidentally enough, the G8 summit is taking place in Edinbrough, Scotland. And, as I've just realized, the venues for the concerts were in each of the G8 countries (how incredible, Annie, to figure this out so late). anyway, I was definitely wishing that I was in Hyde Park listening to the likes of Coldplay, Paul Mccartney, U2, and Elton, but what can you do? I was at Macy*s instead. At least Pam and I had a great conversation about Justice O'Connor's resignation and how our country is now UNDOUBTEDLY goign to go down the shitter because of some psychotic judicial appointment by Bush that will undermine our civil liberties and put the ten commandments on every street corner. I am scared shitless.
On the Live 8 note, my friend and yours, Sir elton john wrote a really moving piece for tomorrow's edition of the Guardian.
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,6903,1520086,00.html Please do read the article, as a reminder of both how lucky we are to be living in a country where homosexuals are not routinely subjected to such gross mistreatment by the state but also as a warning of where the intolerance of our conservative regime may very well lead, even in this "civilized" country, beginning with the denial of the basic right of marriage to same sex couples.
So tomorrow...I have the day off. And Roger Federer is playing. YESSSSSSS.
I've also been quite active on this website designed to be a forum for assistants in France next year. However, so far, it sounds like people have had dodgy landlord, have barely scraped by, had the French teachers hate them for being Americans...and that's pretty much it. It also sounds like there is about a 100:3 ratio of women to men -- so the prospect of finding a bloke or gosse (is that what they call them?) is not terribly promising. What about a Belgian boy? Jesus, anything but American. I am not going to Europe to do something I could just do in the states...
