last evening a man in a wheelchair was struck by a much larger motorized mode of transport right before us. i pulled right over. my companion called 911 and i retrieved the injured man's soda cup so it didn't blow across port st. lucie blvd. i looked at the man's legs for a good while and for the hour or so i slept, the wove their way into my dreams. i was also asked to record something for a calexico record during that hour, but that's neither here nor there.

just now i was driving and i saw a car pulled off a pretty lonely road with its hazards on. lonely roads and i aren't used to having company at 3 in the morning, so i slowed down to look for the driver of the car, i suppose 28% because i was curious to see who was driving on my road but 72% because i thought i could be of assistance. i rolled down my window and next thing you know, i'm driving this strung out interracial couple, the female half of the couple being preganant, to the next gas station i know of. i buy a gallon of water and the pregnant lady drinks some. i think she says her name is amber. she doesn't look like any amber i've ever known.  she asks me, "so where are you headed, anyway?" i tell her i'm not headed anywhere; i just can't sleep. i pour the rest of the water out and fill it with gas and take them back to their car. while we're driving back, the pregnant woman who i think is called amber turns to the man in my backseat and says, "this angel just can't sleep. can you believe it?" the male half of the couple asks why i have a tambourine on the floor. he later spills gas all over my left foot. the woman hugs me and thanks me and  i cringe and completely stiffen up. her name has to be teresa or shayna, i decide, because no amber would elicit such a physical reaction from me.
