Control

I had a revelation today. It was a moment of genuine clarity, and it lasted only a moment before it passed. For that moment, I realized how malleable this reality is. It was as if I got the distinct impression that I have complete control over everything around me. While I realize that sounds completely absurd, I also believe that such is true for every one of us. If we think deeply enough about the events unfolding around us, we will eventually realize that our actions and perceptions have a very real and very immediate impact on everything that occurs around us. It is too easy to say that things happen to us. I think that we happen to everything around us. We are too quick to assume that we are powerless and we become content with the idea of watching our lives unfold around us, as though it is all a dream, or a television show portrayed on a 2-D screen.

So many people… so many perspectives. There is only one world, but so many different viewpoints. For some, the world is plain and taken at face value, for others it is beautiful, a wonder to behold, for more, it is a fantasy world, dark and secret. No matter what the viewpoint, it is equally real for everyone, and every day, we impose that perspective on everything we experience. So at what point do we take responsibility? When do we finally accept that all the things happening to us are entirely under our control?
