Andrea Cohen may have won Outstanding Soloist at Absolutely Tampastic last year, but as far as Dakota Stanley cared, that was nothing. Heat exhaustion was nothing. She was fairly sure she could have keeled over and died, and that would be nothing.
And that was why she was locked up in one of the rehearsal studios at seven o’clock on a Monday morning, hair falling loosely around her face, singing “Mercy,” which Dakota Stanley - or The Monster, as she not-at-all-fondly called him - had not yet declared satisfactory.
You got me beggin' you for mercy
Why won't you release me
You got me beggin' you for mercy
Why won't you release me
I said you better release me
And as she sang, she found tears of exhaustion, anger, and sadness, rolling down her cheeks, until her voice cracked and she was sobbing. It hurt just to lift her arm over her head now. And she could barely stay awake in class. And she was going to fail this year again. Damn you Dakota Stanley, damn you.
As she took a deep breath, calming herself, she heard a knock on the door. She inhaled again, and turned around to unlock the door, whatever, whoever, came.
