Gay Weddings and such

In San Francisco, Belmont to be precise, at the casa de Peachy and Carol, Chip's mom and partner.

Yesterday, these two wonderful women were wed in a ceremony that was touching, hilarious, and perfect. There were children there, amongst the slightly more than 2 dozen adults. I could not help but wonder if these children will grow up in a world where same-sex marriages are commonplace, and acknowledged by law everywhere. I am filled with hope.

Peachy endured 3 marriages to men, and as a result had 2 wonderful children, before it became clear to her that she did not want to be with a man. Her partnership with Carol has spanned almost 2 decades, and you would be hard-pressed to find a more meant-to-be couple.

Last night, over dinner, our new acquaintance, Shannon that ballet dancer told us about his "2 dads" in New York, and how he was so young when they got together that it never seemed strange to him. We all marveled at how many of our friends were the products of a few years of confusion before parents found their feet in the sexuality they were meant for.

A few years ago, while swapping stories with our young, gay friend, Chip admitted relief at this new generation of gays who had never tried to be straight.

I know that some people believe it is wrong in the eyes of God. I can't imagine a god so cruel that he would deny anyone the joy and fulfillment of love.

I know that some people are threatened and repulsed by gay people, but I imagine that they simply have never spent any time with them.

As Peachy and Carol, middle aged and teary eyed, spoke their vows against the gleaming backdrop of the bay, and the San Francisco skyline, I couldn't help but feel it was a small victory for love, for acceptance, and for a future where truth and justice prevails.

I hope that in the future, all of you can attend such a ceremony, and have your faith in love without bounds, stripped of dogma, free of prejudice, renewed.
