I am currently midway through my first time giving out candy to trick-or-treaters and I gotta say, the kids are getting lazy in regards to the protocol. C'mon, at least say "trick or treat" and maybe "thank you". Or just "trick or treat," even. It's better than them standing there with bags open, ready to dash to the next house

Bad kid idea:
Kitty litter
pennies (choking hazard!)
tampons (OB is great for bloody noses!)

I just berated some high school kids for not even bothering to try. Not dressed up at all carrying plastic grocery bags. I still gave 'em candy, cuz I'm nice like that.
I just got a bit dressed up myself-- not necessarily in costume, just minorly gothed up in some tall black boots, purple tights, black skirt, Addams Family tee, sweater with skulls on it, and misc skull jewerly.
My selection of spooky music to put on was sadly lacking, so I had to settle for Portishead, Rasputina, Voltaire (not spooky, but goth!) and a shitty Projekt compliation.
(Take one fucking guess where I work.)
I couldn't carve pumpkins because squirrels keep EATING the pumpkins. To compensate, I bought a glow-in-the-dark Jason mask for the pumpkin to wear. Sadly, it didn't fit the pumpkin, so I stuck it on a bush-ornamental-tree-thing. I now have spooky shrubbery.

That's thinking!!!
I'm thinking of having face paints and extra buckets by the door for kids who can't afford it. We live near a trailer park. We have Pringles snack packs and candy bars and toys to give out.
I love the holiday. We didn't get to go all out this year, but ... I like to think we are going to do okay :)

I just got an awesome bunch of middle school (??) kids. Dressed up, asked for my cat instead of candy, and even said "Thank you! Happy Halloween!" Sweet kids.
