Hello all! I just got home from Thanksgiving in Vancouver and thought that I was overdue on a posting. I was right! So, this week we are starting our persuasive essays. This should be an interesting unit as i've never had to write an essay quite like this before. Of course, your typical essay with thesis and argument is persuasive in meaning but this is different. I'm excited to try my hand at it.
I read over the readings for last week. Both, of course, were persuasive arguments that were vastly different in style. "A Walk on the Wild Side," dealt with the changing landscapes in speakers home. It was very descriptive and she was really able to make it seem like a dire situation. I liked how she would describe a place and then turn it into something almost disgusting to her. She was able to make the argument of converting these lands that are used to something beautiful like in Wisconsin. It was a good read. The other piece, "Letter to the ASPCA," was very different. I can say that I laughed a couple of times at his descriptions and at the context of the letter. It was hilarious when he said that Minnie "doesn't answer the phone" so how can they ask for her name, sex and phone number? It was very convincing in getting himself out of trouble through semantics. I think that really, whoever received the letter probably just had to let the issue go because who can argue with this nutball??
Some of the internet explorations were really helpful in finding ideas about our next assignment and in helping me figure out what I need to do. The first two, "Tips for Persuasive Writing" and "UBC Writing Centre..." were really helpful in figuring out what i'm doing here. I can honestly say that I had no idea what to do. If anyone was stuck finding ideas I would suggest checking those two out. I browsed through the "SpeakOut" exploration too and found some really good ideas. On the left hand side of the page there are "Activism Centres" that I had a look through. I found alot of information about different moral topics that I could write about.
I think this assignment is going to bit tough but i'm excited to give it a try. Hopefully i'll meet some success with it along the way!
